California Again Claims Yuma Island VUMA - UPI - California hai again laid claim to Yuma'« "island" and Arizona authorities arc expected to do something about K. Four unarmed deputies delegated by the Ft. Yuma Indian Tribal Council yesterday ran off construction crews of California's Imoerial Irrigation District. The men who laid out power poles Tuesday, arrived yesterday to install them for three fourths ·f a mile to serve five families. The Indians said no one. had permission to do such work. The construction crews left peaceably. Arizona Public Service Co. had refused to serve the same families on the controversial island The Arizona utility wanted to wait until California and Arizona B o u n d a r y commissions determined who owns the land. The Arizona Corporation Commission in late March orderec Imperial Irrigation District, then engaged in a similar project, to ·how cause why it should noi stop. Sen. Harold C. Giss (D-Yuma) Influenced the commission to postpone the hearing indefinitely until ownership of the island is ·stattished. The land is just north of Yuma ·n the California side of the Colorado River. Both states claim It. The Indians do not care who owns it. But they want to en force their laws on it A month ago, Indians strappet ·n sidearms and tried to collec tolls from farmers.
