In the foreground is a model of the 164-year- old mission as it is believed to have appeared around 1822 when nearly completed. Tumacacori A Shrine In Early Days Mission Built By Franciscans This is the second of a series on six National Park Service sites in Southern Arizona, designed to acquaint new Tucson residents and visitors with them and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the service. By HELEN PASTERNAK Citizen Staff Writer San Jose d Tumacacori, a national monument located 48 miles south of Tucson, enhances our gateway to Mexico with it» olden grace. Revealed here is Arizona's early history dating to 1691 when the famed Father Kino, a Jesuit priest, first visited the area to say Mass for a small tribe of Indians. The story behind crumbling adobe walls is of Spanish domination, missionary priests bringing religion and cultoe to a desert area, warring Apaches and peaceful Pima and Papago tribes, Indian revolts against the Spaniards, Mexican rule, and abandonment. A little more of Tumacacori's history comes to the surface with each excavation conducted at the monument and also with the tracing of old documents. Although the history dates back to Father Kino's time, the present mission was the work of Franciscan fathers, who followed later. Work on the mission was believed started in 1802 and, while never completed, it is known to have been in use in 1822. Abandonment by the Pima Indians occurred around 1848 and then came deterioration. . The mission, proclaimed a national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908, was kept under the jurisdiction of the Forest Service until taken over by the then newly established National Park Service in 1916. Reasons for setting it aside as a monument were to preserve a typical Spanish m i s s i o n church and provide an understanding of the work of priests at that time. Some restoration work has been done to prevent further deterioration brought about by weather and vandalism. A visitor center and museum with exhibits depicting the eariy history are located on the 10- acre site. Visitors over the age of 16 are charged 25 cents each for a self- guided tour. The tour can be made with the help of booklets provided by park rangers. Rangers say guided tours have been tried several times, but dropped as visitors seemed to favor going through on their own. How to Get There Space Rescue Need Seen CAPE KENNEDY--tf)-Man must learn how to rescue orbiting astronauts stranded in a disabled spaceship because "it is a problem we all know will one day confront us," a recovery force expert says. St. Lawrence-Hutlsou Waterway Rejected WASHINGTON -4Pi-- Savings on shipping costs would not be enough to wararnt the cost of a waterway connecting the Hudson and St. Lawrence rivers, an international study panel has concluded. The International Champlain Waterway Board reported its findings to a joint commission of United States and Canadian governments which had requested the study. A public hearing on the report is scheduled for May. "Space rescue is entirely feasible and well within t h e known state of the art," said CoL Emil G. Beaudry, vice commander of the Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Service at Orlando, Fla. In a technical paper presented during the opening day of the third annual space congress, Beaudry said one analyst concluded there is a 62 per cent probability of at least seven emergency situations in space involving 22 men in the next 20 years and a 58 per cent probability of two or three emergencies within 10 years. He observed the vast amount of effort project officials now take to insure astronauts' safety before they are launched and said "rescue in space is but the logical extension of this traditional humanitarian role."
