···BUSINESS AND FINANCE TUESDAY, MARCH 5, 1968 PASE 30 Stocks Drop But Support Appears To Be Shaping Up NEW YORK (AP) - The stock market continued its decline early today but there were growing signs of support. Trading was active. Profit taking overtook some gold mining and copper stocks which advanced sharply against the downtrend Monday. Modest recoveies were made by a number of the badly bat-1 tered glamour stocks. Up about 2 points were IBM, Polaroid and Control Data. Xerox and Eastern Airlines tacked on about a point each. Benguet, the Philippine gold miner, eased. Dome Mines dropped a full point. Mclntyre P o r c u p i n e nudged higher fractionally. Some gold mining Issues were late in opening. In the copper group, Cerro and Calumet Hecla dropped fractions but Phelps Dodge advanced about 1%. Kennecott and Anaconda added fractions. J. Ray McDermott was off '/, at 65 on a block of 67,500 shares. International Paper lost % at 27 on 5,600 shares. ' T h e ; British pound continued under heavy pressure and demand for gold continued heavy in London. There still were fears abroad that the United States would change the dollar exchange value of gold. OVER THE COUNTER Quotations from the NASD are representative inter-dealer prices as of yesterday. -Prices do not include retail markup. The sharp drop in new factory orders for January was a bearish factor. Prices declined on the American Stock Exchange. Trading continued active in gold mining and copper stocks but there was profit taking. Giant Yellowknife dropped about a point, Burma Mines a fraction afer opening on 12,100 shares, up 1-16 at 13-16. Campbell Chibougamau wiped out a gain of y a at 11% on an opener of 25,100 shares. Syn- tex rebounded more than a point. CHICAGr (AP) _ Soybeans and wheat futures prices ad- anced on the Chicago Board of Trade Monday, but weakened profit taking. Other under . grain prices were mostly mixed. An easier price trend in spot cotton markets and uncertainties in world monetary developments unsettled futures. Liquidation was absorbed through scaled down commission house and trade buying. Ten March delivery notices were issued and they were said to have been promptly stopped. The average price for middling" 1 1-16 inch spot cotton declined 18 points last Friday to 31.48 cents a pound at the iead- ing markets. However, dealers said the decline was accentuated by action of the agriculture department last Friday dropping Charleston and New Orleans from the official spot markets designated for quotation proposes.
