DECREES OF MARRIAGE DISSOLUTION ROMERO, Carla F. and Keves R. 9 75 road death dip cited Mile for mile, safest year CHICAGO (AP) -- Mile for mile, 1975 was the safest year for motorists in U.S. history, the National Safety Council says. The nation's highway death rate dropped to 3.5 for every 100 million miles traveled last year, lowest in the 52 years the council has kept statistics. The J974 rate was 3.6, the council said. The council said there were 45,600 traffic deaths in 1975, the fewest since 1963 when 43,564 were recorded. There were 46,200 in 1974. Disabling injuries in traffic accidents totaled 1.8 million in 1975, about the same as the year before, the council reported. The council estimated that motorists logged 1.31 trillion miles last year, compared with 1.29 trillion in 1974. The number of registered vehicles increased by 4.1 million to 139 million. The cost of traffic accidents to the nation's economy was estimated at $20.8 billion. A spokesman said the biggest reason for the drop in fatalities was reduced speeds. There was also less travel on high-risk rural roads, less night driving, a reduction in occupants per vehicle and more use of safety belts. "The 1975 traffic reports indicate to us that motorists have changed their way of driving for the better," said the spokesman. "There seems to be a new emphasis on safety." Empire State suicide site NEW YORK (UP!) -- A 26- year-old man scaled a "suicide fence" on the 86th-floor observation deck of the Emp i r e S t a t e B u i l d i n g a n d jumped to his death. The man fell to a sixth-floor terface of the building. The fatal jump was only the second] from the observation deck since the high railing was constructed in 1946. However, there have been 15 jumps from other parts of the building during that time.
