MONDAY EVENING, APRIL 29, M3 T U C S O N D A I L Y C I T I Z E N PAGE 3 Southern Presbyterians . . . -' t/. Taclde Race Relations f HUNTINGTON, W. Va.~ UP)---The topic of race relations, which has sparked one mild flareup" in the Southern Presbyterian General Assembly, was expected to be discussed thoroughly today, · · A . report strongly critical of the church's role in race relations, and recommending that the assembly go on record In favor of abolition of race ; barriers in all church institutions, was to be considered:.,"':.'" : " . ' , ; . , ' A MILD CONTROVERSY arose Saturday on a racial matter, but was resolved with relatively little difficulty. The Presbytery of Northwest Missouri had proposed that the General Assembly-highest court of, the 928,000- member Presbyterian Church, U.S. (Southern) -- announced it. would not meet in any city without assurance that hotel and restaurant f a c i l i t i e s would be available on a nondiscriminatory basis. The standing committee on assembly operation, which considered the request, suggested ?t with the statement the present policies and practices provide for the expressed concerns. This was adopted after one (delegate) protested that more teeth' should be put in present policies. HE SAID HE had heard that, some-Negro commissioners had encountered discrimination in Huntington. Others incluJing two Negroes, de nied there had been any discrimination. ' A'.'Jj.t Ray, a Negro from Thomasvilie, Gal, told the assembly, "we have been treated royally.", , ' Also, scheduled for presentation today was a report on t h e Presbyterian Development Fund Campaign, which had s o u g h t $12 million. Pledges totaling $13,038,043 to date were to be reported, with predictions of $15 million by the time the campaign closes June 15. Other matters to be considered Include a proposal to permit ordination of women, and one to withdraw from the National C o u n c i l of Churches. THE ASSEMBLY heard a panel discussion last night on the proposed unification with the 225,000-member Reformed Church in America, which operates mainly in the Northern United States and Canada. A report by a joint committee of the two churches which has been exploring the matter, will recommend continuation of the committee.
