PRESS-TELEGRAM (PM1 L«* turn c.m.. f n.. j»». 17, it» TeleVues iBlake debuts tonight as 'Baretta' TOP VIEWING TODAY By BOB MARTIN TV-Radio Editor ; ; Remember the guy who played the stockier of the two killer? in tli6 itKsvis version of Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood"? 'Robert Blake is the actor's name. Well, Blake is coming to the tube tonight as the star of his first television series, called "Baretta." Blake's on the side of the law now as Tony Baretta, an undercover cop more interested in getting results than in abiding by standard police procedures. The 60-minute series makes its bow on Channel 7. at 10 o'clock. "Baretta" is an offshoot of "Toma," which starred Tony Musante in the 197374 season on ABC and which reportedly was dropped only because Musante didn't wish to continue in the role. When ABC originally announced its plans for January 1975 midseason replacement series, "Toma" -- starring Robert Blake -- was on the 'list. Bui Blake didri't, like the idea of filling another actor's shoes, and reportedly refused to sign the contract unless the name of the detective was changed. SO IT'S Tony Baretta instead of Dave Toma -who was, incidentally, a real-life Newark detective -- who will be bringing criminals to justice each Friday night on Channel 7 the next few months. One difference in the two characters is that Musante played a married man, whereas Blake portrays a bachelor. Baretta also is said to have more of a sense of humor than Toma. Dana Elcar also will star in the series as Baretta's superior, Inspector Shiller, and Tom will be a special guest star in the recurring role of Billy Truman, a retired policeman who is the house detective at the hotel where Baretta lives. Guest starring in tonight's episode are Madlyn Rhue, as Tony's girlfriend who is slain . while on a date with him, and Andrew Prine as Andy Scanlon. Blake, who's in his early 40s, was a child actor in "Our Gang" comedies, the "Red Ryder" film series and in feature movies. Since his part in "In Cold Blood," he has starred in the movies "Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here," "Electra Glide in Blue" and "Bust- LEE MAJORS should have a million and a half dollars for every time his "Six Million Dollar Man" series has been moved by ABC. The series makes its final Friday appearance from 9 to 10 tonight on Channel 7, then starts airing two evenings later in the 7:30-10-8:30 Sunday time slot on the same station. This will be the show's fourth time period since it was introduced last January. It's a tough way to keep an audience. "SHAFT" didn't, last long as a TV series and "Planet of the Apes" has gone off the air. But you can see the original "Shaft" movie and' the last of the "Apes" movies in a film twin bill on CBS Channel 2) tonight. "Battle for the Planet of the Apes," with Roddy McDowall and Claude Akins, will be shown from 8 to 9:30 and "Shaft" from 9:30 to 11. It's the first time on TV for each of the movies. Richard Roundtree, who also starred in the watered-down TV series, rOSC tu |jrOiuiiisiiCe as the tough black detective T _ U -- £*U**/.L i 11^ inn* ·luiiu onaii ui me 1911 movie, which features Oscar-winning "Theme From Shaft" music by Isaac Hayes.
