PAGE 12 T U C S O N D A I L Y C I T I Z E N THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1973 Brazilian probers sentenced Narcotics quiz deaths cited RIO DE JANEIRO -- Eight Brazilian soldiers and two policemen who worked , with them have been sentenced to a total of 473 years in jail after Jour ,19-yeaE-old soldiers died 'during interrogations about their alleged involvement in drug trafficking. The verdict and sentences-ranging from 84 years to one year -- were pronounced after ,a four-day secret trial in an army court. : Lt. Col. Gladstone pefassetti Deixeira, who was com- juander of the garrison at the time of the deaths,, was sentenced to seven years,in pris: on but military sources said he was to face further "charges.- The story'first came to light last February -with an announcement from the army public, relations office that said military officials had uneartliied what they believed to be a drug ring operating among soldiers at Bara Nan- sa, jhfmiles west of Rip de Janeiro. In trying to get information. about the operation, the announcement said, officers entrusted .with the .interrogations "acted, in a depraved manner, provoking the death of the sol-, diers." '.-. Since : that brief announcement with no further explanation, there was no mention of the case'until recently, when it was announced the trial was about to begin. . The court said some of the . evidence put before it indicated other officers were involved. ;It asked the prosecutor to begin an investigation into the alleged involvement of these men. Similar, orders are expected shortly from the .Marine Corps. · The Army and Air Force have yet to adopt these'drastic measures but officials indicate similar steps may be taken if the price trend continues.
