PAGE 20 T U C S O N D A I L Y C I T I Z E N FRIDAY, MAY 12, 1967 Sheinwold On Bridge By ALFRED SHEINWOLD BRIDGE PLAYERS ARE NOT PERFECT ; It may shock you to learn that bridge players are not perfect, hut the truth is mighty and shall prevail. The fact is that bridge players don't always know when to stop. .« North deafer North-South vulnerable NORTH * A2 V Q53 A52 * A Q 6 5 2 WEST EAST * 63 * K 7 4 V J 1 0 9 I 2 ? J West led the jack of hearts, covered by the queen and king, and won by the ace. South tried a club finesse at once, losing to the king. -East should have returned a diamond, but he actually led the seven of hearts, winning the trick. This was the time to stop, but East led another heart. South ruffed the third round of hearts, led a club to the ace and ruffed a club. He then tried a trump finesse, losing to the king. Too Late East returned a diamond, but it was too late. South stepped up with the king of diamonds, led a trump to dummy's ace and ruffed another club. He then drew the last trump and entered dummy with the ace of diamonds to discard the jack of diamonds on dummy's good club. East should return a diamond upon winning his club trick or even after getting a trick with the. seven of hearts. The idea is to use up dummy's entries before declarer can safely cash the last club. South steps up with the king of diamonds, leads a club to the ace, ruffs a club and tries the spade finesse. East wins with the king of spades and leads another diamond^ to force out dummy's ace. Now South can ruff out the jack of clubs, bu he cannot draw trumps and return to dummy for the last club East can get a trick in each suit if he knows when to stop a good thing and turn his attention to something else. Daily Question Partner opens with 1-NT (16 to 18 points), and the next player passes. You hold: Spades, K- 7-4; Hearts, K-7-6; Diamonds, 87-6; Clubs, K-J-10-8. What do you say? ANSWER: Bid 3 -- NT. Since you have 10 points, the combined count must be 26 to 28 points, which should be enough for game at notrump. BURN YOUR BRIDGE(s) BEHIND YOU.
