PAGE 52 Best season ever T U C S O N D A I L Y C I T I Z E N FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1976 overcomes mat woes By ALLISON HOCK Citizen Sportswriler "That Barry," the wrestling coach sighed as he watched his star work out. "You cannot be eating at Hardee's and expect to keep your weight down." It is a season fulf of headaches, some minor, like Barry Batson's weight, and some major, for Eli Noble, Pima Community College wrestling coach. The Aztecs, at 5-2, are already assured of their best season ever before they meet Central Arizona at Coolidge tonight -- the last regular match of the year. The people who watch such things had picked them to go that far when the season began but nobody could have predicted the problems. Al Zamorano, a 118-pounder who was 17-3 last season, was expected to lead the team this year. A-State, Cats lead league in scoring Tomorrow's 144th basketball meeting between arch-rivals University of Arizona and Arizona State University will match the two best-scoring teams in the Western Athletic Conference. Latest WAC statistics show A-State No. 1 in the league with an average of 75 points per game and Arizona No 2 at 74.3. The teams meet at 7:30 tomorrow night in ASU's Activity Center in Tempe. A 5:15 p.m. preliminary game will match the two schools' junior varsity teams. UA, which is 16-6 overall and leads the WAC with a 5-1 record, is No. 1 in conference rebound percentage (.549), seventh in field goal percentage (.462), third in free throw percentage (.685) and tied for fifth in scoring defense (713). A-State is sixth in rebound percentage (.483), eighth and He led them one match and then quit the team after disagreements with Coach Noble. Orlando Smith, 158 pounds and last year's state champion at Pueblo High School, was expected to come out for the team but he changed his mind. "I'd like to say we'll finish first or second in the conference, but it's going to take the luck of the draw," said Noble during a break in practice. His hopes rest heavily upon sophomore Batson who lost in the quarterfinals of last year's nationals, and sophomore Dan Rosier, beaten only once this season in dual meets. Batson, ever affable but not always disciplined according to Noble, can wrestle at 158, 150, or 142 but the lower weights are his best. "He just cannot stay away from greasy foods," moans Noble. The Arizona Community College Athletic Confer- ence championships start next Thursday at Phoenix College, and Pima's wrestlers are faced with the task of beating two teams they haven't won over yet this season. They are Phoenix College, ranked No. 8 in the nation among junior colleges, and Mesa Community College, No. 5 with a 10-fl record. "Everybody's strong below (the low weights), but Mesa and even Phoenix are going to be hard to beat at 167, 177 and 190," says Noble. Three of Phoenix's top performers are Sunnyside High School graduates, a fact which doesn't make the coach any happier. He hopes to comer the high school wrestling market here, and the more successful his teams are, the better the Tucson talent he draws. In the team's premiere year, they were only 0-91, and last year, they went 4-6. Prep tennis rained out Yesterday's rain forced postponement of all but one of II scheduled high school tennis matches. In the only action involving local teams, the Palo Verde girls' squad dumped Tucson High, 8-1, at Palo Verde. All other matches, involving both girts and boys play, were canceled. Aztecos defeated The Pima women's basketball team will no doubt spend more time practicing free throws after last night's 62-49 loss to Central Arizona. The Aztecas failed to make 16 free throws in losing their third game of the year in the Arizona Women's Commum'.y College Conference. Central's leading scorers Stephanie Stripling and Vicky Bumham, who entered the game averaging 20 points, were held to seven and eight points respectively. But the Vaqueras made up the difference at the foul line, hitting 22 or 33 shots. CENTRAL ARIZONA: Ortiz 1 4-8 8 Carson ^ 4-7 12, Mauch 3 3-3 9, Coales 5 57 15, Hocsman 0 3-8 3, Slrioling 3 1-1 7.
