TO DARK Plants Bloom i For Mother Flower shops and garden centers are blossoming gayly with-a wide selection of Mother's Day gift plants, including many new varieties, as well as old favorites. You'll find handsome caladiums in large clay pots for decorating the living room, a shaded terrace or patio. If you like, the plant can be gently tapped from its pot, and planted in a shaded border protected from wind and drip from trees or buildings overhead. Caladiums can also be used to advantage in large window boxes or planters. You can leave thern in their pots and submerge the pots in vermiculite, perlite, or peat-moss. Keep both the soil in the pots and the surrounding material moist. Other popular Mother's Day plants are wax begonias and azaleas. The wax begonia makes an excellent house plant for a partly sunny window sill. It likes sun at all times except during the middle of the day. At that time give it shade from the burning sun's rays. Flowers will continue to open all summer and even well into fall and winter. The plants caaalso be taken from their pots and used in a shaded border together with caladiums. You can brighten all sides of color-loving households by picking Mother's Day gift plants properly. Adaptability of plants to both indoor and outdoor locations should be carefully considered. Ask your florist for advice. For southern exposures, there are many popular plants which thrive in sunny windows, such as azaleas and red and pink geraniums. For north or west win j dows the sun doesn't hit too directly, potted amaryllis are suggested. Gloxinias, cyclamen and the ever-popular African violets prefer subdued or diffused sunlight and should be set in north or east windows. Wax and angelwing begonias should be placed where the sun is not too strong. In shopping for new Mother's Day house plants, don't neglect the array of attractive foliage and bedding plants. They can add varying hues of cool, rich greens and delicate colors to any arrangements of flowering plants. A few of the interesting f o l i a g e plants you'll find at. this festive season include dracaena, ficus or rubber plants, philpdendrons in many varieties and sizes, dwarf palms, peperomia, ivy, kalanchoes and ferns which are popular favorites again.
