TUESDAY, MARCH I, T U C S O N D A I L Y C I T I Z E N PAGE tt Gen. Walt Covers Lot Of Ground DA NANG, Viet Nwn - ff _ You see him everywhere. One day he's it a hospital con- jollnj wounded Marines; the next he's bopping out of a helicopter in a battle zone. He is Lt. Gen. Lewis W. Walt, 63, who won his third star Friday -- Wo second promotion to 1« months. He is the commander of 40,000 Marines gad 5,000 Navy support personnel to South Viet Nam. Once a South Vietnamese unit under attack by North Vietnamese army regulars called for help from the U.S. Marines. Despite poor visibility, Walt boarded a helicopter, flew 80 miles from his base at Da Nang and personally led his Marines into the beleaguered outpost 4 Thach Tnfc After the helicopter flight to Thach Tru, an officer who had accompanied Walt remarked: "The man is absolutely fear- Jess/' JUST AFTER Walt left the outpost, the Viet Cong dropped several mortar rounds near the area where be had been standing. "When he's got somewhere to go, it takes a hell of a lot to stoo him," says an officer who knows foe general well. "He'll sacrifice a little safety factor to get foe job done. This demonstrates a lot about him. He doesn't give up easily." "He's my kind of Marine, an3 I'd follow him to hell and back," a veteran sergeant said "He's a big enough man to take time out to make the little man feel good," says a member of Walt's staff. "That's real good for morale." Whenever a man is wounded, Walt, takes it personally. The hospital at Da Nang calls Walt's staff every day, and the general goes there to award Purple Hearts. IN OCTOBER, an infantry company was attacked by the Viet Cong and took several casualties. The attack occurret about 1:30 a.m. Before dawn Walt had been to the hospital with Purple Hearts. Walt makes his men' feel close to him and gains their confi dence. "He's not distant," says an aide." "He doesn't sit behind i desk and say, 'I'm a general. I've admired him for that." But Walt also can be stern "When he's upset, he gets S retty damn stern," says one of cer. "I think he's a very demanding person. He mows what he wants and wants it to be done. He'll accept nothing less. You don't mind working hard for him because he appreciates it. "He is a big man because he seeks other people's opih ions on different things. He lis tens to everyone's opinion be fore he makes a decision." Walt, a burly 200-pounder, is soft-spoken. He is commonly re ferred to as "Silent Lew."
