Temperatures were winter cold today, with most highs only in the 20s and in some areas dipping from 20 to 30 degrees below normal. It will remain frigid tonight with light snow showers expected. The National Weather Service forecast continued snow squafls near Lake Michigan with up to 3 inches of snow accumulating. Highs will be in the 20s and lows predicted in the teens. Mostly cloudy and cold with light snow showers to the north and a chance of flurries in the south on Tuesday. Spring one week away, but snow covers nation Winter lingered with below-normal temperatures covering most of the nation early today, and snow was predicted in many sections even though spring's only a week away. At 1 a.m. EST, freezing temperatures were reported as far south as San Angelo, Texas, and in Fort Smith, Ark., and Crossville, Tenn. Late-night temperatures were mostly in the single digits and teens from Wyoming and Colorado across the northern and central Plains to the upper Great Lakes region. Snow showers, mostly light, extended Sunday night from the upper and middle Mississippi Valley across the Great Lakes region and northern sections of the Ohio Valley to the northern and central Appalachians. Heavier snow was falling along the shores of Lake Superior and Lake Erie. A heavy snow warning was posted through today in northeast Ohio. Three to 4 inches fell Sunday evening at Thompson, Ohio. An advisory for 1 to 3 inches of snow was in effect this morning over northwest Pennsylvania. Four inches of new snow fell Sunday night near Marquette, Mich. Heavy snow was forecast today over the northern Rockies.
