Rattan Comes Into Its Own Rattan is a mighty versatile wood! Designers like working with it because they can create styles in many moods, oriental to Spanish -- and certainly Polynesian. There are groups for veranda, recreation room, casual living rooms and dens -- and even more formal living quarters. The Summer Casual Furniture Manufacturers Association describes a few of these collections and individual pieces. The Polynesian influence dominates one collection. Design motifs include the Gothic arch and palm leaf used on chair and sofa backs. Frames are rattan and table tops are of monkey-pod veneer with fascinating light and dark markings. Table bases are carved with busts of Polynesian idols. Seating pieces are upholstered in foam with covers in exotic cotton floral prints, unusual stripe arrangements, and textured fabrics. The group includes seating units, dining groups, occasional tables, a bar with thatched top back bar, plastic-topped front bar and upholstered stools. New also for summer is a collection in the Mediterranean feeling. Designed by John Wisner, A.I.D., the collection is in blonde rattan accented by black wrought iron pulls on drawers, carved scroll inserts. on sofa and chairs. Authentic Spanish-inspired features include saddle leather strapping to form back supports for sectionals. There are party tables and chair groups, a" daybed corner group, sofa, sectional, and a high-backed chair and accessory pieces including a cigarette table. · Many groups are imported from the Orient including the new "KI" (from the Japanese meaning wood). In Philippine rattan, the "Kl" consists of upholstered arm chair, sectional sofa, and occasional tables. Another group includes a love seat, occasional chairs, tables and a stool. This group is for either outdoor use (in varnish finish) or for indoors in lacquered finish. Vinyl-coated cushion covers are used with the outdoor group and fabric covers for indoors. Frames are rattan; table tops are woven cane. There also is a big selection of chairs and swivels, a handsome bar for use indoors and a portable bar with rope handle and tray top for either inside or outdoors. An unusual pedestal dining group uses a broken-tile design in Micarta for table top. The company has an unusual low-boy dining group, in lacquered colors. Jade, Chinese red, black teak, and antiqued French bisque. A wide range of seating pieces, occasional chairs, bars, party table groups, and accent pieces also is available. A tall butterfly table is very unusual. A mark of quality is the securing of No-Sag spring units to hardwood frames within the rattan -- instead of tacking springs to the rattan. A new process also permits applying rattan trim to plastic table tops without using nails or screws, providing completely smooth surfaces.
