B2 SUNDAY, MARCH 25, 1990 LOS ANGELES TIMES METRO NEWS By JACK PETERS INTERNATIONAL MASTER CHESS fa CAMPUS: Ixartiing a Lesson in Life teammate and best friend, Bo Kimble, posed before game in February. BEDSPREAD KINGDOM DECLARES INDEPENDENCE Yesterday, Al Greenwood, the Bedspread King, gave the United Nations and the Long Beach City Council notice that the Bedspread Kingdom was declaring Itself an Independent nation. That proclamation was received with relative calm by citizens and shoppers In the well-stocked aisles of the Bedspread Kingdom. There was a small uprising on the Bedspread Kingdom's parking lot but It turned out, that had nothing to do with the declaration ol independence. A couole of auvs were fiahtlno for the same parking space.

International ob servers noted that this was the strangest start of an independent nation. No troop movements no riots. It was all done by mall with a registered letter. AL GREENWOOD. THE BEDSPREAD KING 12131 498-9277 2750 E.

Pacific Cml Hw. at Temple Lii luck OPEN 7 DAYS 10 TO 5:30 Continued from Bl Gathers, a 6-foot-7 center, led the NCAA in scoring and rebounding last year. The 23-year-old senior, described by teammates as the squad's emotional leader, was also rated a probable first-round draft choice by NBA scouts. On the clean, well-manicured Loyola Marymount campus in Westchester, signs of Gathers are everywhere. Bouquets of red roses and carnations grace the feet of a stone statue of a lion; a sentimental poem about individuality is taped to the statue's pedestal.

"Hank hankies" silver-and-burgundy bandannas bearing Gathers' number, 44 decorate apartment windows. Newspaper clippings about the team are taped to dormitory walls. Students are wearing T-shirts that show a smiling Gathers making the last slam dunk of his life, with the words "We Love You, Hank" underneath. And when the Lions eked past Alabama's Crimson Tide for a 62-60 win Friday night, Anter, Cervera and hundreds of other undergraduates threw open their apartment doors and rushed into the quadrangle, hugging, pouring beer on one another and chanting "Hank is here! Hank is here! Hank is here!" "We are the heart of the lion," screamed Derrick Tatis, stumbling about after the victory with a Hank hankie wrapped around his head and a mug of beer in his hand. "We're going all the way.

We're a team of destiny. Hank is in us all. You want any more cliches? We got 'em all. This team is on a mission." But beyond the cliches and the predictable revelry that goes with a winning team, there is a very serious side to what has happened at Loyola Marymount in the wake of Gathers' death on March 4. His loss hit students hard even those who didn't know him say they found it hard to concentrate on their schoolwork and to come to grips with why someone so young and seemingly invincible should have his life cut short so abruptly.

In a sense, Gathers' death created a common bond. Students say the tragedy has brought the school closer together, sparking new friendships and reinforcing old ones. Rahiem Swann, who intends to major in political science but says his true love is singing, recalled an intense discussion that he and the members of his rhythm and blues band, all of them Loyola Marymount students, had after Gathers died. INTERNATIONAL NEWS Former world champion Anatoly Kar-pov edged closer to victory in his Candidates final match in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, against Jan Timman of Holland. Karpov won the adjourned fourth game, then drew the sixth and seventh games to take a 4V5-2VS lead in the best-of-12-games series. Timman, the world's third-ranked player, has not come close to defeating Karpov, while Karpov has squandered several opportunities to stretch his lead.

The winner will challenge Gary Kasparov in the 1990 world championship. The 1990 world championship match will begin in New York City on Oct. 7. New York Mayor David Dinkins announced Wednesday that the World Chess Federation (FIDE) had agreed to stage the first 12 games of the 24-game match in New York, and the final 12 in Lyons, France. The Soviet Union won the Summit match, a double round-robin team tournament on 10 boards in Reykjavik, Iceland.

After losing to England, 4-6, in the fifth round, the Soviet team had a lead of only a half-point over England and 1 14 points over the United States. In the final round, the Soviets barely drew the U.S., while England was held to a draw by the Nordic all-stars. Final standings: U.S.S.R., 31H-28VS; England, 31-29; U.S., 30-30; and Nordic all-stars, 2TA-32 Vi. The Soviet team, which lacked Kasparov and Karpov, won three matches and drew two. The U.S.

team lost four matches but registered the most onesided match victory, 7W-2V4, over the Nordic' team. Top-scoring Americans were Alexander Ivanov, 5-1 on 10th board, and Walter Browne, 4V4-114 on sixth board. NATIONAL NEWS The 1990 U.S. Masters, held last weekend in Oakbrook, attracted a strong field of 120 players, including 14 rated over 2500. Tony Miles, the British grandmaster who now represents the U.S., defeated GM Maxim Dlugy in the final round to take first prize of $5,000 with a score of 6V4-'i.

Stuart Rachels was second at 6-1. GM's Sergey Kudrin, Michael Rohde and Leonid Shamkovich and IM Michael Brooks finished with 516-1)4. LOCAL NEWS Michael Lamon of San Diego won the high school section of the 73-player Southern California Scholastic Championships in Westminster last weekend. Lamon scored 614-)6. He qualifies for the playoff for the Southern California adult championship, and he will represent Southern California in the Denker Tournament of High School Champions in Jacksonville, in August.

Igor Frayman was second with 6-1. Harvard High School of North Hollywood won the team prize. Nemenja Isailovic and William Surlow topped the Junior High section with 414-14 scores. Jonathan Goldfarb swept the Elementary championship with a perfect 5-0. The Southern California Junior Open, a tournament for students in grades K-9, will be held March 31 at Pearblossom Elementary School, 12828 East Ave.

The late Hank Gathers, left, and "We sat down," Swann said, "and we told each other exactly how we felt about each other and how close we wanted to stay to each other." Band member Jason Frank was there. "We just told each other that we all love each other," he said, "that we're like brothers now, and that we're all here to hold each other up." Other Loyola Marymount students say the loss of Gathers, a poor youth from Philadelphia who seemed all set to live out a fairytale dream of rags to riches, has caused them to take a fresh look at their own lives and values. One freshman said it made him realize for the first time that no matter who you are rich or poor, young or old, famous or unknown "you can very quickly be gone." Another said she is now more determined to "make all you can out of every day." And although they are elated at their team's performance, Loyola Marymount students have come to see that while winning is a whole lot of fun, it certainly isn't everything.

"I don't think they have to win," said freshman Will Milano. "The first time they stepped on the court without Hank, they won." That aside, the prevailing opinion at Loyola Marymount is, of course, that the Lions will not be denied when they face Nevada Las Vegas this afternoon. Aside from having an old score to settle (UNLV defeated Loyola Marymount when the teams met earlier this season), these students believe the Lions are somehow destined to become the regional champs. "There's something carrying our team," said junior Sandy Rodriguez as she and her classmate, Jennifer Seubert, pored over microfiche in the school library on Saturday. "There's somebody looking over our team." Said Seubert: "It's Hank." CARNATION Los Angeles, CA 1620 N.
