TIMES SI AIT WKIIT-K Surrounded by crowds of excited teen-agers and exploding flashbulbs, I experienced Los Angeles' latest tourist attraction the other day in the Fairfax District. Me. Well, not me, exactly. Santa Claus was the focus of attention from Japanese visitors who piled by the busload into Farmers Market.

That is where 1 was on rent-a-Santa duty to dispense candy canes and Christmas cheer. Most of the visitors were young. And most pulled cameras from their pockets and purses and rushed me when they spied Santa strolling among the outdoor shopping center's famous food and fruit stands. Each wanted a picture taken standing next to Santa No Ojisan that jolly old man in the red suit. "Santa Claus is very famous in Japan," said tour guide Ken Kanazawa.

"He's in many movies and on TV." Here is one of his occasional reports. in Japan a holy day in some parts of the world that is more of a fun day for Japanese.

The day is much the same for some locals who frequent the 56-ycar-old marketplace, near one of Los Angeles' oldest Jewish neighborhoods. Many of the 20,000 or so who stop off at Farmers Market each day are more likely to celebrate Hanukkah than Christmas at home. For that reason, I was nervous when I was first told I was being sent on a four-hour Santa shift there even after officials of Western Temporary Services assured me that they often recruit Jewish Santas for seasonal work at shopping centers. But my worries evaporated two weeks ago while on a Santa assignment at a mall in Manhattan Beach. That day, a group from Congregation Tifcreth Jacob was conducting a menorah-lighting ceremony across the food court from my Santa stand.

When it was over, the rabbi's children, 5-year-old Marissa Hyman and her brother, Jonathan, 8, shyly waved at me. Then they came over and wished me happy holidays and handed Dec. 23. 1990 Position 5094: Blnck to piny and win Finin Ihi! (j.imi! After a hard-fought 86-move draw Game fl21, Kasparov leads the match, 1 1 He needs only one draw to retain his title. Kasparov has often expressed contempt for Karpov's play and his personality. On a few occasions during the match, though, Kasparov grudgingly praised Karpov's fighting spirit. After the 20th game, Kasparov went still further. "He saw that I wasn't going to take any risks," Kasparov said.

"That's why he decided to fight today he's a great fighter. He doesn't care how much he loses by one point, two points he only wants to win the match." Lately the two rivals have resumed analyzing together after each session of play. Yasser Seirawan of Seattle defeated Jan Timman of Holland in their KFIO match in Hilversum, Holland. After losing Game 2, Seirawan won three straight games, taking an insurmountable 3-1 li lead in the six-game series. The match was the ninth in the annual series, sponsored by a Dutch radio company, which pits Timman, the best Dutch player, against foreign stars.

Farmers Market patrons treated Santa with the same kindness. Nora Handelman, Dorothy Levinson and Tillie Feinstein invited St. Nick to join them for coffee as they sat huddled against Thursday's unusually chilly weather in front of a marketplace doughnut shop. Feinstein grabbed the bottom of my beard and lifted it up. "I want to see who's underneath there," she exclaimed.

Even the oldest of shoppers grinned when I stopped them to ask if they'd been good little girls or boys this year. They beamed when I reached into my candy cane bag to reward those who claimed to have been nice. I got a laugh when male shoppers happily confessed to being naughty. "Maybe Santa should give you the whole bag," I told them. When a 65ish woman who said her name was Doris demanded to know what Santa was bringing her this year, I suggested she sit on my knee and discuss the matter.

To my surprise, she agreed. "This is the first time in my life I've ever sat on Santa's lap," Doris said. Her wish list included a cure for AIDS, rain for Los Angeles "and a man for me." Tourists at Farmers Market had different requests for Santa, "Henley did not even know he was in a crash," Herek said. "He stayed passed out through the whole thing." Immediately after he plowed into the house, Henley unconsciously kept applying pressure on the accelerator, causing the engine to rev at high speed, Herek said. The engine overheated and caught fire.

The living room also caught fire, as did parts of the kitchen and garage, Herek said. The crash woke Henley's wife, Laura, who thought it Was an earthquake, Herek said. Janice Scott, 5, of Los Angeles however. AIRolnick of Wilmette, was wishing for warmer sunshine for his Southern California visit. He could have stayed home if he wanted to be cold at Christmastime, he indicated.

But Robyn Ford of New Zealand was looking for snow. It's summertime in Auckland, where she lives. Her family was stopping off briefly in Los Angeles on its way to Colorado for a skiing vacation, she said. AI.SKIB Los Angeles Times hugs Santa at Farmers Market. Vans and tour buses full of camera-wielding visitors were still pulling up when it came time for Santa to pull out.

I changed out of my Santa suit and beard in market manager Sherif Barsoum's office before leaving. I hid the red suit in a bag. As I walked out wearing jeans and a sweater, I rcflexively waved toward a new group of Japanese tourists flocking in from the parking lot. They ignored me. caused $76,000 damage to their home, Herek said.

No injuries were reported. Henley was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. He denied that he was intoxicated and refused a breath test to determine if he exceeded the blood-alcohol limit of .08, Herek said. Henley was held at the Pico Rivera sheriff's station jail. In the first 12 hours of the Christmas holiday weekend, at least 300 other drivers in Los Angeles County were arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated, authorities said.

Bonilla's daughter was not the one involved in the Montana case but had been reported missing in the Los Angeles area in 1983, the statement said. She was found in Bonilla's house last week and placed with Child Protective Services pending a reunion with her mother in California. Bonilla was scheduled for arraignment Wednesday on federal Social Security charges in Seattle.

He missed the garage door, the front door and ended up in his living room. Henley had just driven up to his home on Avoncroft Street, when he fell asleep, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Michael Hcrck. Henley was not injured in the crash. PLEASE HELP US ATCHRISTMAS "She said she started to roll over and go back to sleep," the sergeant added.

But the unusual sound of water flowing through the living room caught her attention, Herek said. A water spigot had also fallen victim to the errant car and driver, and spewed into the house. Laura Henley got up to find the family car on fire inside her living room, and her husband still asleep behind the wheel, Herek said.
