LOS ANGELES TIMES SD SUNDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1990 B7 By JACK PETERS INTERNATIONAL MASTER CHESS San Diego County Digest Motorist's Troubles Began When He Arrived at Home mmmmfmfm 2 lfimifm abcdefgh a.m., caused $15,000 in damages. Two senior citizens who suffered smoke inhalation refused to be taken to the hospital, fire officials said. Four men robbed a wholesale jewelry salesman in Linda Vista Friday night and made off with an estimated $500,000 in gold, rubies and diamonds, police said. Chau Minh Pham, 37, was walking to his car with two briefcases containing ruby necklaces, diamond rings and gold chains after having made a sales call in the 6900 block of Linda Vista Road when four armed men drove up and robbed him, police spokesman Bill Robinson said. Pham, a jeweler from Garden Grove, estimated the value of the contents of the briefcases at $500,000, Robinson said.

Three of the four men had handguns and the fourth was armed with a rifle, Robinson said. The getaway car, a light blue Toyota, had been stolen from the Linda Vista area on Thursday and was found abandoned Saturday in the same area, Robinson said. No shots were fired and no one was injured in the incident, Robinson said. kitchen and garage, Herek said. The crash woke Henley's wife, Laura, who thought it was an earthquake, Herek said.

"She said she started to roll over and go back to sleep," the sergeant added. But the unusual sound of water flowing through the living room caught her attention, Herek said. A water spigot had also fallen victim to the errant car and driver, and spewed into the house. Laura Henley got up to find the family car on fire inside her living room, and her husband still asleep behind the wheel, Herek said. She woke her husband, their four young children, the children's grandmother and the family dog, and together they watched as fire caused $76,000 damage to their home, Herek said.

No injuries were reported. Henley was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. He denied that he was intoxicated and refused a breath test to determine if he exceeded the blood-alcohol limit of .08, Herek said. Henley was held at the Pico Rivera sheriff's station jail. By JOHN H.LEE TIMES STAFF WRITER WHITTIER William Henley almost made it home safely Saturday.

The 36-year-old Whittier motorist, who authorities said apparently had been drinking, pulled into his driveway about 6 a.m. and kept going. He missed the garage door, the front door and ended up in his living room. Henley had just driven up to his home on Avoncroft Street, when he fell asleep, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Michael Herek.

Henley was not injured in the crash. "Henley did not even know he was in a crash," Herek said. "He stayed passed out through the whole thing." Immediately after he plowed into the house, Henley unconsciously kept applying pressure on the accelerator, causing the engine to rev at high speed, Herek said. The engine overheated and caught fire. The living room also caught fire, as did parts of the CAMCORDER WAREHOUSE 1990 Model! up to 40 Below Retail CALL l-'On PRICE i mil DOir (2I3 420-7277 or 1-SOO-800-8EST San Diego The first joint sobriety checkpoint between the California Highway Patrol and San Diego police netted 13 suspected drunk drivers Friday night, police said.

Of 682 drivers that passed through the checkpoint in the 2400 block of Grand Avenue in Pacific Beach, 17 were asked to perform sobriety field tests. Thirteen of those were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs or both, said police spokesman Bill Robinson. Another person was arrested for a misdemeanor weapons violation of having billy clubs, Robinson said. Eight highway patrol officers and a dozen San Diego police officers ran the checkpoint from 9 p.m. to early Saturday morning, Robinson said, adding that police may set up another checkpoint on New Year's Eve.

Under the joint effort, the two law enforcement agencies operated the checkpoint and used the CHP's portable Breathalyzer machines, which San Diego police don't have, Robinson said. Two fires in San Diego caused a total of $85,000 in damages Saturday, left two adults and five children without a home and injured two senior citizens, fire officials said. A blaze at a home in the 1500 block of Klauber Avenue in En-canto began at 9:20 a.m. when one of the five children living at the home was playing with matches and set a couch on fire, fire officials said. The fire spread to a Christmas tree that was next to the couch, and then engulfed the whole house.

Fire officials estimated damages in that blaze at $70,000. The family living at the house was taken in by the Red Cross. A smaller fire ata Point Loma senior citizens complex began when a cigarette ignited a chair in a multipurpose room of the complex in the 1000 block of Scott Street, fire officials said. Francisco Quintana, 25, was stabbed twice and robbed while walking in the 3100 block of National Avenue at 6:09 p.m., police said. Quintana was taken to UCSD Medical Center where he was listed in good condition, police said. In a separate incident, police were called to 44th and.Wightman streets at 6:18 a.m., where they found a man with a gunshot wound in his back.

The 44-year-old man was transported to Mercy Hospital, and police said that although the injuries are "not life threatening, it appears he will be a paraplegic." Hospital officials said he was in good condition. Police did not have an explanation for the shooting. the vehicle passed through a rail road crossing on Lassen Street, a block west of Canoga Avenue, police said. Witnesses said the car apparently was trying to beat the train to the crossing, and that the car's driver ignored flashing red lights and swerved around two cars- The impact of the crash threw the teen-agers from the car, which was smashed nearly beyond recog niuon, omciais said. Not convincing is 1 INTERNATIONAL NEWS Gary Kasparov almost clinched victory in his world championship match against Anatoly Karpov in Lyon, France, by winning the 20th game in spectacular style. After a hard-fought 86-move draw in Game 21, Kasparov leads the match, 1 1 He needs only one draw to retain his title. Kasparov has often expressed contempt for Karpov's play and his personality. On a few occasions during the match, though, Kasparov grudgingly praised Karpov's fighting spirit. After the 20th game, Kasparov went still further.

"He saw that I wasn't going to take any risks," Kasparov said. "That's why he decided to fight today he's a great fighter. He doesn't care how much he loses by one point, two points he only wants to win the match." Lately the two rivals have resumed analyzing together after each session of play. Yasser Seirawan of Seattle defeated Jan Timman of Holland in their KRO match in Hilversum, Holland. After losing Game 2, Seirawan won three straight games, taking an insurmountable 3't-1 Vi lead in the six-game series.

The match was the ninth in the annual series, sponsored by a Dutch radio company, which pits Timman, the best Dutch player, against foreign stars.
