1360 Silas Deane Hwy. Rocky Hill (203)563-6517 Mil i By TINA A. BROWN Courant Staff Writer GLASTONBURY The arch-stonfe bridge on Route 17 is not just a medium for residents to walk, cycle and! jog to pick up their mail and gralj a bite to eat. The structure, built in the 1800s, addi to the historical character of South Glastonbury, residents said Thursday night at a public hearing of the State Department of Transnorta- jionand Department of Environ-1 mental Protection. The hearing was held because the DOT has proposed replacing the brijige that crosses over Roaring Brook with a more modern roadway.

To-do that the DOT must obtain a wetlands permit from DEP. During the hearing, DOT engineer Ricfjard F. Lyon argued that the current bridge cannot be repaired because it has missing stones and moijar. To make any repairs, he said" the state would have to dismantle uie bridge. To leave it as it is, he said! could be a serious safety prob- lemoecause the bridge will crumble.

he condition of the stone masonry concrete portions of the bridge were the critical elements that rated the bridge poorly enough to bfc put on the DOT replacement program," Lyon said. "'Andrew Davis of the DOT'S office ot environmental planning said the proposed project would have little environmental impact on the area. Environmental Analyst Brian Golembiewski and DEP Attorney Cheryl Chase agreed with the DOT preliminary findings. They recommended to DEP hearing officer Donald Levenson at the hearing that the bridge be replaced. The cost of the proposed bridge to be; constructed by 1995 is estimated at $1.8 million.

Residents said at the hearing that the two state agencies didn't seem to consider the project's impact on South Glastonbury's historical district or its residents. "Being a Nayaugan, I'm quite fond of that bridge. That bridge isn't ugly to me," said Tim Gaillard, who said he uses the bridge nearly 10 times a day. Gaillard said he is not opposed to restoring the bridge if it is unsafe. He questioned whether state officials really considered residents before they decided on the design of the modern structure.

i'Don't give us that," said Gaillard, pointing to an artist's rendering of the proposed replacement. "It's very concrete," he quipped. i want to know how I am going to get to my post offices and cleaners fof two years," Gaillard said. Lyon said U.S. Postal Service officials in Hartford said the post office is Supposed to be relocated by then.

But Joanne Polazzi, who heads the South Glastonbury post office, said she has heard that since she took her post seven years ago. HomeOffice Cleaning Merchandise Merchandise Merchandise WOMEN'S CONVERSE CLEATS 7Vi, gd cond. $20 688 6568. Rowing machine. Like 561-2948.
