BURNS FUNERAL H0ME637-I4I4 EARLEY "He was a great charmer and connected directly with his music. He didn't have a lot of banter; his skill was really through the keyboard," his daughter said. He often accompanied singers at Henny's. "He could make anybody sound good," said Blum. "He was a tremendous musician." Several of his instrumental, "Honeymoon in Manhattan" and "Waltzing by Candlelight," were recorded on the Somerset label on long-playing records by the 101 Strings.

Mr. Johnson was a lifetime member of Philadelphia Local 77 of the American Federation of Musicians and a 40-year member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). Besides his wife and daughter, he is survived by sons, Gerald and Theodore; another daughter, Georgia Kel-ley; 10 grandchildren, and a greatgrandchild. A viewing will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. today, followed immediately by a service, at Sudak Funeral Home, 815 Washington Cape May.

Burial will be at Cold Spring Cemetery. By Andy Wallace INtjlTRKR STAFF WRITER J. George Johnson, 80, of Cape May, a pianist and composer, died Wednesday at Burdette-Tomlin Hospital, Cape May Court House. In a musical life that was already underway when he was a teenager and didn't stop until a few months before he died, Mr. Johnson composed more than 500 tunes and spent most of his evenings entertaining at the piano.

Although none of his songs ever hit the top of the pop charts, "Victory Song," a tune he wrote while a sophomore at Gratz High School, is still played at Gratz football games and graduations. He and his wife, Anne Spear Johnson, who wrote the lyrics for many of his songs, were still getting small royalty checks for such songs as "The Laughing Samba," which was recorded by the Andrews Sisters and still is played in Australia and elsewhere. And old-timers still remember him at Henny's of Stone Harbor, the restaurant where he played pop songs, sentimental favorites and some of his own tunes for more than 23 years. One of the songs the customers wanted to hear was Mr. Johnson's "Stone Harbor," which became the theme song at Henny's.

"We had someone emboss it in needlepoint and we have it on the wall," said Norman Blum, who was co-owner of Henny's when Mr. Johnson used to spend six nights a week at the baby grand in the bar. In 1961, Gerald Johnson, quarterback for the Central High School football team, heard his father's song played by the Gratz band during halftime of a game between Gratz and Germantown. Johnson was there scouting for a game against German-town. "It blew me away; here they were still singing this song," he said.

Mr. Johnson moved to Cape May in 1969 for the health of his wife. Not long after, the couple wandered into Henny's for lunch. Catching sight of the baby grand, he asked if he could play. The owners hired him on the spot and he played there for 23 years.

FADEN SXANDER SOVEREIGN from D1 an honest chance it would work, we wouldn't have gotten to this stage." Under the plan, Sovereign will issue 3 million new shares of stock for sale at the 40 percent discount. Patriot Savings customers who live in Berks, Chester, Lehigh and Montgomery Counties, and who have had accounts since at least Jan. 31, will get first chance to buy the stock, with any unsold shares being offered to other depositors and then to the public.

Two percent of the Sovereign stock will be reserved for Patriot Savings executives, Gerhart said. That's less than in many merger-conversion deals, which should allay concerns of a management giveaway, officials said. "The vast majority of the benefit in a deal like this goes out to the existing depositor base," said Joseph Major, a Pottstown lawyer and a member of Patriot Savings' board of directors. "This is the archetype of the deal the regulators are looking for." Sovereign, which has 81 branches and assets of about $4.5 billion, would also gain handsomely from the deal. The company would not only acquire Patriot's branches and its customer base but also add Patriot's capital, about $22 million, plus an additional $21 million raised in the stock sale, to its own net worth.

Considered a high-flier among savings banks, Sovereign has pleased Wall Street investors by continuing to post profits even while expanding rapidly from Reading to the Jersey Shore. The company earned $30.6 million in 1993. Kaufhold Abraham, 81, a lifelong Camden resident whose civic work and sense of duty helped change Camden's form of government and led to her serving on the Mayor's Advisory Council for most of the 1960s, died Wednesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, Camden. A homemaker and active in the former Rosedale Civic Association, Mrs. Abraham put her beliefs about democracy and government to work as she campaigned to change Camden's commission form of government to the current mayor-council form in the late 1950s. "She was one of a group of independent-minded women who were very civic minded and were dedicated to bringing about a better society," said former Mayor Alfred L. Pierce, now a Camden lawyer.

"They were concerned about the schools, the betterment of government and society generally. They were particularly helpful in my election campaign." She was appointed to the Mayor's Advisory Council in 1959 when Pierce was mayor and was campaigning to change the government, he said. In 1961, he was elected the first mayor under the new form, and Mrs. Abraham served on the advisory with him? "She was always a joyful, happy and smiling woman, but she also liked to stay on top of things," said her son Karl Abraham. "She could be a worrywart." 5.04 9M i.
