22: Harvard, 1 Fourth Quarter throwing short passes. They could have been watermelons." Williams answered Perceval's touchdown with a quick score, Mike McAdam's 45-yard run up the middle. Then Wesleyan took charge. The defense stopped Williams twice deep in its end, then Fay connected with Tom The-mistocles on a 16-yard touchdown pass with 28 seconds left in the half. "That probably was the key play of the day," Hauser said.

"It sent our kids into the locker room on a high." Wesleyan opened the third quarter with a 60-yard scoring drive, capped by Fay's 19-yard pass to Moore. Themistocles' 9-yard run made it 28-6 with 10:26 left in the game. "This is the game when we finally came together," said Themistocles, who rushed for 152 yards on 34 carries as John Pascucci, the Cardinals' leading rusher, nursed a bruised knee. "This is a big-time win. I'm overwhelmed.

I can't put into words how this feels." team, and a team that comes back and wins every week like Williams does is good." The Cardinals defense never gave Williams (6-1) a chance to come back. After giving up a second-quarter touchdown, Wesleyan allowed Williams past midfteld only once until late in the fourth quarter. By then, the Cardinals held a 28-6 lead. "Offensively, we did what we needed to do," Hauser said. "And the way our defense played was the biggest factor in the game." Wesleyan quarterback Jake Fay completed 16 of 31 passes for 237 yards and three touchdowns.

Nate Moore, Matt Perceval and Shane Doyle each caught four or more. Perceval's second catch a 5-yarder from Fay gave Wesleyan a 7-0, second-quarter lead after freshman Ben Kozik kicked his first of four extra points. "My receivers did a good job of getting open," Fay said. "I had all day to throw. Our offensive line wore their defense down.

We just kept By TOMMY HINE Courant Staff Writer MIDDLETOWN It will be remembered as Wesleyan's finest day of football in at least six years, a thrill that will linger long after playing and coaching careers end. Wesleyan defeated previously unbeaten Williams 28-14 in wind-driven rain Saturday, the Cardinals' first victory over their Little Three rival since 1985. Wesleyan (6-1) controlled both lines of scrimmage.

It humbled a team that had won eight in a row since last year. And, despite the miserable conditions, the Cardinals didn't have a turnover. A victory at Trinity (5-2) Saturday would give Wesleyan its best record in 28 years. "This is a big one. This is a real big one," said Frank Hauser, in his sixth year as Wesleyan coach.

Camsius 14 Saturday Siena Nov. at lona. noon Nov. IS: al St Peter's. 8pm By WOODY ANDERSON Courant Staff Writer AMHERST, Mass.

In a steady rain that had begun just before kickoff, Amherst football players held their helmets high and sang the first verse and chorus to the school anthem, "Lord Jeffrey Amherst," which included this line: and he conquered all the enemies that came within his sight." It's something they do after every victory. Amherst was much better at football than singing Saturday in a 35-8 defeat of Trinity. The victory was a clean kill, but unbeaten teams do that, even to good teams such as Trinity (5-2). Amherst (7-0) plays at Williams (6-1) next Saturday for its first unbeaten season since 1984. Trinity must collect itself for Wesleyan (6-1) at home.

Trinity will find this game hard to forget. Coach Don Miller, in his 31st season, is the winningest Division III coach in New England history. He said he saw probably the worst first half of his career when his team trailed 28-0 at halftime. Amherst led 14-0 after 5 minutes, 4 seconds. Amherst quarterback Rich Wil-lard, who became the school's career leader in passing yardage with 4,009, found Shaun Quigley for 37 yards and, on the next play, Colin Barnacle for 15 to set up Darin Byrne's 2-yard touchdown run.

After Trinity bungled a pitch on fourth down, Amherst had the ball on its 25. A Trinity pass interference penalty got Amherst rolling. Byrne ran 19 yards, then 38 for the second touchdown. Several themes were set in motion in the first 5:04. Amherst was able to hit the long pass, make key runs and defend Trinity's option.

"Trinity puts a lot of pressure on its defensive backs because of all the blitzing they do," said Willard, who was 14 of 32 for 264 yards. "They were daring us to pass." Amherst's defense, ranked first in Division III in points allowed (6.2 a game), set up another easy touchdown when free safety Todd Nichols intercepted on the Trinity 31. After another pass interference penalty, Quigley caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Willard with 9:39 left in the second quarter. And 41 seconds before halftime Willard hit Barnacle for a 37-yard touchdown pass. Amherst had 13 tackles for losses totaling 74 yards.

Linebacker Seth Zimmerman, who had a game-high 14 tackles, said team speed beat Trinity's option offense. "We got to the corners before they did, then they had to pass," he said. The Yale touchdown came on a 50-yard interception return by linebacker Todd Scott. He cut in front of Brian Cosmello in the right flat for the score early in the third quarter. This came after Finn's touchdown on the second play of the game and Penn QB Matt Rader's 8-yard run around left end midway through the second quarter. "I warned them at halftime that Yale was one play away from getting back into the game," Penn coach Al Bagnoli said.

Yale was back in it when defensive tackle Adam Hernandez recovered Jason McGee's fumble at the Quakers 10 with 14 minutes, 7 seconds left. A pass interference call on cornerback Larrin Robertson gave the Elis first-and-goal at the 2. But on the next play Whittaker fumbled and safety Mike Ferguson recovered at the 1. Though the announced estimated attendance was 3,600, there were 724 fans in their seats for the opening kickoff. After Whittaker's fumble, most of the remaining drenched fans were packing their umbrellas.

Two plays later Finn, bounced off two tack-lers and went down the left sideline. He veered across the field at the Yale 25 and proceeded across the goal line, tying for the second-longest TD run in Penn history. He completed Penn's scoring with a 27-yard reception from Rader with 10:26 left. "Finn made the big play," Siedlecki said. "Penn made the big plays.

That's why they've been and are consistent winners. That's what we need to do." By TOM YANTZ Courant Staff Writer NEW HAVEN To describe Pennsylvania's 26-7 victory over Yale Saturday, begin with Jim Finn. Finn, a junior tailback, carried 21 times for a career-high 187 yards and scored three touchdowns, one on a 92-yard run. His first score came on his first carry, for 38 yards. In horrible playing conditions at Yale Bowl, produced by pelting rains driven by 40 mph gusts, Finn had nearly twice as many total yards (212, with 25 receiving) as Yale (110).

"Sure he runs people over, but he has got good speed, too," Yale coach Jack Siedlecki said. "He has played defensive back." Finn started at strong safety the first five games for the Quakers (4-3, 3-1 Ivy League). He had been a two-way player until last week against Brown, when he rushed for 94 yards and three touchdowns. He played only offense against the Elis, but that was enough. "It was lousy out there, but I loved it.

I just steamrolled ahead on most plays," said Finn, who is 6 feet, 220 pounds. "Then on that 92-yarder, I showed a little speed, too." Yale (1-6, 0-4) remained winless in the league. To make it worse, quarterback Joe Walland separated his left (throwing) shoulder early in the third quarter. The injury occurred when he was tackled by Mitch Marrow on a rollout for an incomplete pass. "That was a late hit," Siedlecki said.
