AMERICAN OPEN The American Open, one of the highlights of the chess year, takes place Nov. 22-25 at the LAX Marriott Hotel, 5855 W. Century Blvd. in Los Angeles. For most of its 26 years, the American Open has been the biggest tournament west of the Mississippi, and that's likely again in 1990.

Chief organizer Jerry Hanken reports that five grandmasters will play, and he hopes for about 400 more entrants. Most players will compete in the eight-round American Open, which offers $25,000 in prizes. Those with holiday obligations may request one or two byes during the first six rounds. Others may consider the American Open Booster, a four-round tournament on Nov. 25 for unrated players and those rated below 1400.

The Booster's entry fee of only $8 should encourage many newcomers to try tournament chess. And the World Blitz Chess Assn. will conduct a speed tournament with $1,000 in prizes on Nov. 21, beginning at 7 p.m. Between rounds, the tournament offers free chess lectures and free chess movies.
