AL GREENWOOD, THE BEDSPREAD KING (213) 498-9277 2750 E. Pacific Coast Hwy. at Temple Long Beach open 7 days io to 5:30 By MICHAEL CONNELLY TIMES STAFF WRITER A man who apparently became distraught when his wife served him with divorce papers shot and killed the woman in the back office of their small Van Nuys restaurant and then turned the gun on himself, Los Angeles police said Saturday.

Officer Marcia Brandt said Fernando Vasquez, 41, and Maria Vasquez, 32, lived in Sylmar and operated a small Mexican restaurant and bar in the 7700 block of Sepulveda Boulevard. "Both had been having marital problems for two years," Brandt said. Maria Vasquez had recently filed for divorce and on Friday went "to the restaurant to serve her husband with divorce papers." After arriving at the restaurant at 2:30 p.m., she went into a rear office with her husband to discuss the divorce, police said. About four hours later, a concerned relative arrived at the restaurant and broke into the locked office, where he found the man and woman dead. Brandt said investigators found evidence that Fernando Vasquez shot his wife in the head and then shot himself in the head.

The gun was found at the scene. ATTENTION DEALERS MUST REGISTER AND SHOW VALID TAX I.D. AND RESALE NUMBERS. Chess Federation, the national body that oversees chess tournaments in this country, held its annual meeting last weekend in Jacksonville, Florida, the site of the 1990 U.S. Championship and 1990 U.S. Open tournaments. The most significant change may have come during the election of officers to the USCF Policy Board, the seven-person committee that makes most of the decisions for the organization. Maxim Dlugy, a 24-year-old grandmaster from New Jersey, was elected president for a three-year term.

Dlugy is only the second professional player to serve on the Policy Board. In 1986, GM Lev Alburt of New York City was elected delegate-at-large. Several titled players have been rejected by the voters. Most recently, GM Yasser Seira-wan of Seattle lost the 1987 battle for the presidency by a wide margin. But Dlugy overwhelmed scholastic organizer Harry Sabine of Tennessee, 238 to 93.

Dlugy ran a smooth campaign, promising reform and modernization of the USCF. He stressed his ties to world champion Gary Kasparov, his experience as an officer of the Grandmasters and his independence from longtime USCF politicians. Sabine, the incumbent vice president, painted a rosy picture of the USCF and pledged to keep up the good work. Obviously, more voters believed Dlugy. In the race for vice president, Frank Camaratta of Alabama defeated incumbent USCF Secretary Ed Butler of Jacksonville, 226 to 94.

Randy Hough of Al-hambra became, secretary, defeating Robert Tanner of Utah, 217 to 1 10. The new treasurer is Gary Sperling of New York City, a former USCF president who defeated Dan Burg of Michigan, 185 to 146. Another professional player, IM John Donaldson of Seattle, defeated Mike Nolan of Nebraska, 239 to 91, to become delegate-at-large. All will serve three-year terms. Two other delegates-at-large, David Saponara of San Diego and Bill Goich-berg of New York, remain on the Policy Board, and Harold Winston will serve one more year as past president.

Man Arrested in Fatal Stabbing A Los Angeles man was arrested after a stabbing outside a Gardena food market that left another man dead.

Gardena police said Saturday. Juan Carlos Cardenas, 25, was being held in Gardena jail after his arrest on suspicion of murder, police said. The stabbing occurred shortly before 6 p.m. Friday outside the Gardena Supermarket, 1012 W. Gardena a market in the city's old downtown section.

Cardenas and the victim began fighting inside the store, police said, and Cardenas allegedly stabbed the victim. A second fight ensued on the sidewalk outside the store, and the victim was fatally stabbed, police said. Cardenas fled and was arrested in the 700 block of Gardena Boulevard, police said. The victim's identity was withheld pending notification of his relatives. I 2 Azusa Youths Rescue Boy Trapped in River Two Azusa youths were being hailed as heroes Saturday after rescuing a 10-year-old boy trapped in the current of the San Gabriel River, Los Angeles County Fire Department officials said.

Fire Capt. Jose Lopez said the youngster was trying to retrieve a hat that fell into the river about a quarter of a mile north of Foothill Boulevard at 5 p.m. Friday. When he was unable to make his way back to shore, he called for help. Lopez said that Raymond Ville-gas and Richard Lopez, both about 12 years old, swam about halfway across the 75-foot-wide waterway and pulled the youngster, whom they did not know, to safety.

The 10-year-old was not hurt, Lopez said.
