C18 SA'IUKDAY. octohkr (), IWO i PRO FOOTBALL REPORT WEEKDAY UPDATE EPSON EQUITY 3S62Q RAMS Falcons1 Youthful Talent Has Impressed Robinson When Ram Coach John Robinson looks at the Atlanta Falcons, his team's opponent Sunday, all he sees arc thoroughbreds. "They've got a lot of talent," Robinson said. "I think you look at the talent, what is it, IS first-round draft choices? They've been accumulating, and they've made a couple of really gootl trades. You start going through the list of some of those guys Practically the whole first offense is first-round draft choices." For the record, the Falcons have 14 first-round picks eight on offense and six of them starters, and six on defense, three of whom start: List Price 53299 personnel moves until today, when the Raiders must inform the NFL office in New York of them by 1 p.m.

"We're going down to the wire just like we did on the trading deadline," Shell said. "Wo haven't made the final decisions yet." Steve Ortmnycr, former Charger director of football operations, was rehired as Raider special teams coach and director of football operations after he was released by the Chargers last winter. The Raiders also have seven former Chargers on their roster offensive lineman James FitzPnt-rick, cornerback Elvis Patterson, wide receiver Jamie Holland, defensive tackle Mike Charles, linebacker Tom Benson, tight end Andy Parker and running back Napoleon McCnllum. Three Raider assistants also worked in San Diego defensive coordinator Dave Adolph, linebacker coach Snm Gruneisen and strength-conditioning coach Doug Wilkerson. Raider owner Al Davis is also a former Charger assistant, and executive assistant Al LoCasalc served as the Chargers' director of player personnel.

On the other side, Alex Gibbs, Charger offensive line coach, was a Raider assistant coach for the last two seasons and strength coach John Dunn worked for the Raiders for the last three seasons. Cornerback Snm Scale is also a former Raider. CHRIS BAKER AROUND THE NFL Walker Says He Is Confused About Role With Vikings Herschel Walker, acquired by the Minnesota Vikings in a trade last year, said he's frustrated and confused over his role in the offense and the criticism he has received on all fronts. "I don't know how long I'll play the game," Walker told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis in an interview from his Dallas home. "Herschel's always going to do what's best for Herschel.

I want to do what's best for the Minnesota Vikings, because they gave up a ton to get me. But since I've been there, all they've done is act like I'm in the way." Walker will become a restricted free agent after this season. Associated Press 386-20. Dimry was beaten by receiver Jerry Rice on four of Rice's five touchdown receptions.

"It was just one of those days," Anderson said of Dimry. "You know he's going to come back this week to try to prove that he's a better DB than that. And I happen to know him personally, and I know he's better than that." -TIM KAWAKAMI RAIDERS There's No Rush to Make Decisions on Personnel Will Howie Long be activated for Sunday's game at San Diego? Will tailback Bo Jackson make his season debut against the Chargers? Will the Raiders put tailback Greg Bell on injured reserve with a sprained ankle? Long, who broke a bone in his right foot on Sept. 16 in a game at Seattle, has practiced this week. "The foot feels fine," Long said.

Arnold, who appeared before the committee that recommends racing dates, said that if the CURB does not approve 18 weeks of harness racing at Pomona, he will ask that the board rescind all his dates for 1991 and 1992 because the sport will not be viable in California. "If you say we arc not going to run at Pomona, then you are saying we should not run harness racing," Arnold said. "Instead, we're going to come back and apply for thoroughbred dates during that time. And if we have to build a mile track to do that, wc will.

We've already had architects and engineers out there looking." The special four-hour meeting in Burbank was punctuated by several interruptions and one harness trainer was asked to leave. The harness interests say the sport will die without year-round racing in Southern California. The opposition comes mostly from Hollywood Park and Santa Anita, whose horsemen use Pomona as a training track. There are about 500 thoroughbreds at Pomona. If Arnold's demand is met, there will be daytime racing at the thoroughbred tracks overlapping racing of quarter horses at Los Alamitos and harness horses at Pomona during the evening.

Don Robbins, general manager at Hollywood Park, said the overlap racing would adversely affect the thoroughbred handle. He cited 198fi. when three tracks ran on the same day. Hollywood's fall meeting lost 15.5 in attendance and 14 in handle during that period, he said. The harness interests contended that the average on -track handle at Hollywood Park dropped almost between 1985 and 1987 and the average handle at Pomona was only $262,000, so that there were other forces besides overlap racing at work.

Since then, satellite wagering has increased handles at all tracks. The subcommittee members, Leslie Liscom, Henry Chavez and Rosemary Ferraro, all said they needed more time and would not offer a recommendation to the hoard. The full board of the CI Ml will rule on Friday. Panasonic. Postscript!
