Contr. Lie. 515732 'Not valid with any other offer. Sun View Room TIM PELL AWT DIES Tim Pellant of Alhambra died Dec. 4 of complications of cystic fibrosis, one day after his 25th birthday.

Tim was a player with an aggressive, crowd-pleasing style, one who never chose a safe continuation when bold moves were available. He will be missed. Tim crammed some significant accomplishments into his brief chess career. He became a master at age 17. At the 1983 U.S.

Open in Pasadena, he reeled off seven straight wins, the best streak in the tournament. As one of the country's top 10 young players, he earned an invitation to the 1984 U.S. Junior Championship. He continued to make progress, pushing his rating over 2350, until his illness prevented him from competing in tournaments. Away from chess, he was a student at Cal State L.A., majoring in broadcast journalism, and the author of an unpublished screenplay.

Tim's illness was congenital, and he rarely discussed it with his chess friends. His death was caused by an infection that his body's defenses, weakened by a double-lung transplant in November, could not repel. There will be a memorial service at the Music Hall of Cal State L.A. on Dec. 17, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Chess players who knew Tim are invited to attend. INTERNATIONAL NEWS I Cal. Contr. Lie. 0515732 Pl7((0D(3(oDDv )(SCSDQJ ooo Hoffritz for Christmas A.
