HOWARD ROSENBERG Emmys: First-time winner Ted Danson of 'Cheers' says it 'feels funny' to finally win the award while Keenen Ivory Wayans of 'In Living Color' says, it's nice to be By IRV LETOFSKY and SUSAN KING TIMES STAFF WRITERS On a night when there was no dominant winner, the talk backstage at the Emmy Awards in Pasadena Sunday was narrowly focused on the individuals bestowed with the statuettes. Those who trekked back to meet the press not everyone did were happy but not always expansive. One of the happiest was Ted Danson. Veteran loser Danson, finally a winner after eight previous Emmy nominations, said that it felt good to be recognized finally for his work on "Cheers." But he also noted that, "It's new to my body: it feels funny." Danson is committed through this season to the NBC comedy, the No. 1-rated show over the course of the past year.

Beyond that: "It's tough to say goodby to it." He attributed his success and that of the series to great writing. "Jt's the writing, come on. Funny things are'eoming out of our mouths," he said. In addition, he said, some of the success is due to the fact that "we don't rehearse until the very last second and we play a lot of football." He said that he had no plans to donate his Emmy to the "Cheers" bar: "I'll carry it everywhere." Marg Helgenberger had definite plans for where to put the golden statuette that, she picked up at the 42nd annual ceremonies celebrating TV's best nighttime programs and personnel. "I think I am going to put the Emmy in my baby's room," she said, after winning as best supporting actress in a drama series.

Helgenberger, who is expecting a baby boy in seven weeks, plays the cynical prostitute K.C. on "China Beach." Her pregnancy is being written into the Please see EMMYS F1S ANACLETO RAPPING Los Angeles Times Co-host Jay Leno: a shot of energy, Leno: Tough Act to Precede ALSBIB Los Angeles Times Keenen Ivory Wayans takes a firm grip of the award for Fox's "In Living Color." A dramatic exception to the early malaise was the Simpsons, each member of this stunningly bizarre family making an appearance in living animation as presenters of the Emmy for best lead actor in a comedy. Uh oh. Bart destroyed the envelope. Homer: "Pick somebody! Does anybody remember a name?" What a kick! In effect, it provided a welcome tribute to an animated Fox series that, despite roaring across Sunday nights like a tornado in its first half season, was shut out of the main Emmy telecast only because its best-animated awards was handed out as part of the craft Emmys.

That event was taped Saturday for airing on Fox Tuesday night. Thus, arguably the funniest series on TV, was not given the wide recognition it deserves, despite executive producer James Brooks lobbying to have the Emmy for best animated show switched to Sunday night. In contrast with past years, in fact, none of the craft awards was even, mentioned Sunday night, That was a slight. Meanwhile, Leno injected himself into the second hour like a human hypodermic filled with adrenaline, showing anew that there's no topping a funny comic when it Please see SHOW, F1S Telecast: Emmy co-hosts Jay Leno, Candice Bergen and Jane Pauley prove once again that comics make the best awards-show hosts. It was infinitely more fun than last year's program.

It was also the worst of times, the best of times and then, finally, the worst of times again. It's striking just how much a host sets the tone for an awards telecast, and Sunday's Emmy program on Fox was no exception. It was uneven the way the Hollywood. Hills are uneven. At least in part that was because of the odd triad that Fox used as Candice Bergen, followed by Jay Leno, followed by Jane Pauley, It was a relay team with its fastest runner between two slow ones, Neither Bergen nor Pauley was very good, or seemed even comfortable, The first and third hours had a perfunctory quality that invaded even a 4V-min-ute tribute to that late-great puppetmaster, Jim Henson.

It was nice, but almost souless and dispassionate to a fault. INDEX What Goes On F2 Movie Guide F3 Morning Report F4 Radio: AMFM Highlights F13 Tonight on TV and cable F14..
