Tucson Rod Gun Club offi cials said they had been told by the Game and Fish Department that trout stocking in the Mt. Lemmon area this year would be confined to the new lake. SOME ROD GUN Club members here have expressed interest in having Soldier Lake and Lem mon Creek stocked as In recen' years. The department reportedly prefers to concentrate Its stocking program in the Mt. Lemmon area on the new Rose Canyon Lake because it's more easily ac cessible, the local club was told Stocking Rose Canyon Lake may be started BOOner than Die June 1 date, but that, is the pres ent target, the local club was in formed.

Stocking will be carried on at later intervals during the summer, according to the report. EARLIER, there was some mix up among department officials as to the stocking date. Depart' ment Director Robert Smith con tradicled a statement by one de partmental official that the lake would be stocked between May and 9. Discussion of Rose Canyon slocking was expected during this afternoon's brief special Game and Fish Commission meeting here. Wh it Tucson Blvd. SU S. Campbell DESERT SPORTSMAN By Bill Davidson Club Attempts Major Projects The Tucson Rod Gun Club has two major projects this year--prying open for hunting a sizable portion of the Saguaro National Monument Area that club research indicates could be hunted, and helping develop a hunting program on the Papago Indian Reservation. Harris, TRGC president, and members of the executive committee report they find there are many thousand acres of the area with no saguaro --land that could be hunted with no damage or threat to the giant cacti. The club is seeking to enlist Arizona Game and Fish Department and Commission aid in developing the hunting for the Papagos.

Harris says the Papagos and the commission have both shown interest. The local club feels the project would benefit everybody, but principally it'd provide additional revenue for the tribe (in the form of special hunting permit fees) and Arizona. And while they're at it, the Rod Gun Club leaders want to see why the Santa Rita Experimental Range, so long dormant and with no apparent use upcoming, couldn't be opened up for hunting, at least in park TUCSON SHOTGUNNERS will be losing a couple of good friends and worthy competitors before long. Harry Hufford has been transferred back to the Los Angeles area after a two-year stint for his firm, the Phoenix of Hartford Insurance in Tucson. Harry's due in the LA office of his comoany May 2.3.

His wife, Carole, and their 18-month-old daughter Cathy wjll follow soon after-, ward. Fans who keen up with here will recall Harry has done right well at the hiph-anrf-lmv-Virmse kind of as well as at trap, and Carole has won an urnole share of women's skeet laurels at the Tucson Trap and Skeet Club Harrv and Carole will doine their scattergunnery at the San Gabriel ValW, Gim dub, where thev shot before moving over here. The San Gabriel club has four electrically-operated skeet traos anrt four more for trao--and the Huffords have already eased to get zeroed in on that imoressive lavout. Couple weeks Harry shot four rounds for a 97-100, and Carole turned In a 24x25. SPEAKING OF SKEET, Jack French has resigned as man-In- charge of that side of the Tucson Trap and Skeet Club's shooting.

Result of a disagreement with club officials. Some other club members are hoping to repair the breach And some Tucson Rifle Club members are grumbling mat the best possible four-shooter -combination was not put together' to play the club's ace -in last weekend's state rifle matches at Ft. Huachuca. The feeling among some shooters was that a foursome composed from a choice among these five shooters--Frank Cannon, Ted Beck, Bob Jensen, Roy Dunlap or Lloyd Jenkins--would have scored much higher and perhaps surpassed me Phoenix Rod fc Gun Club's top civilian team performance. At the Washington's Birthday matches in Phoenix, also a event, Cannon was high individual and the team won the over-all match (Phoenix Rod Gun placed fourth in mat match), NORMA, THE SWEDISH ammunition outfit, Is out now with a new MS Magnum, not to be confused with Winchester-Western's .358.

(But (t will be confused, of course) Norma says the .358 Magnum loading with a 250-grain bullet has 2,790 feet per second muzzle velocity, 4,322 foot-pounds of muzzle energy. The 250-grain projectile is the only one I've seen figures on so far. Word is this load has a belting per second velocity left at 200 yards, and energy at that range is reportedly is mighty hefty It uses a belled-head Magnum case, has a short- enough case (2.52 inches) to permit chambering for it with actions of length. It uses bullets with a one-in-12-inch twist to the rifling. It sounds like mild competition for the new .338 Winchester Magnum and for the long-established .375 HH Magnum.

Two Scandinavian firms, Husqvarna of Sweden and Schultz Larsen of Denmark, make rifles for the .358 Magnum, but Norma is offering reamers and other gear and data for American and other gunsmiths who to build rifles for the new load.
