Gurevich edged GM Alexey Shirov of the Soviet Union on tiebreak to win the world championship for players under age 20. Each scored 10V4-2V4 in the 58-player Swiss-system event, Third, at 9K-3M, was IM Vladimir Akopyan of the Soviet Union. Although ranked only 11th at the start, Gurevich scored against the formidable four-player Soviet contingent to take the lead, and finished the tournament as the only undefeated player. His victory automatically earns him the title of International Master. Gurevich, who was born in Kiev, came to the United States in 1980 and earned a Class rating, very high for an 8-year-old, Playing in many New England he made rapid progress.
