Davis Survives Two Knockdowns Monday, July 10,1978 Elder Wins GMO In Playoff INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) Olympic lightweight champ Howard Davis won his eighth straight pro fight, but he learned something too, coming back from two knockdowns at the hands of Norman Coins. Davis came back from the canvas to win a unanimous decision in a 10-rounder nationally televised by CBS. Davis, of Glen Cove, N.Y., swept the final four rounds of the bout.

The referee and two judges scored it 98-94, 96-94 and 98-91 for Davis, the 1978 Olympics champ. Coins, of Indianapolis, a former national AAU and Golden Gloves champion, dropped Davis with an overhand right a minute into the first round for a mandatory eight-count and again with a left hook late in the fifth round. at 2:58 of the fifth round in the other lightweight 10- round bout, with a short right to the head and a left under the ribs. Stanton, of Merrick, Long Island, N.Y., began to take control in the fourth round and clearly controlled the bout in the fifth, but the fighters could have been rated about even until the knockout. Copleand weighed in at ISfl 1 Stanton at 137.

It was Stanton's second victory over Copelan, who lost to him last year by a decision. In the state heavyweight title match, Tom Prater of Indianapolis outclassed Clyde Mudgett, Indianapofis, shortening a scheduled eight- rounder to five rounds. Prater, at 196 pounds, outweighed Mudgett by nine pounds. Davis weighed 134; less than a pound more. Coins now is 19-8-1, with two no-decisions.

A.L. All-Star GameatSan Diego) FRANKLIN, Wis. (UPI) As soon as he teed off on the 197-yard eighth hole, Lee Trevino seemed to sense the sudden death playoff was over. Ke grimaced as the ball landed in a sand trap, then walked slowly to the green with his head down. Along the way, he paused to say a few words to his opponent.

(UPI) Bill Muncey claimed his powerboat rode like a car with two flat front tires after losing a stabilizer, but he turned the Ohio River into the "Muncey Freeway" and won the Madison Regatta Sunday. It was his fourth straight win in unlimited hydroplane racing and his sixth at Madison.

He averaged 109.409 miles per hour over the 2V 2 mile course to win the Indiana Governor's Cup. Muncey, 49, of La Mesa, owner-driver of the Atlas Van Lines-sponsored boat, broke the course qualifying record Saturday at 117.340 mph. His win was almost an anticlimax after a third heat duel against Ron Snyder. "Anybody who would've seen our second heat wouldn't have given this boat a 10-cent chance in Hell of even finishing this event, much less winning," Muncey said. His other three wins this season were at Miami, Detroit and Owensboro, Ky.

Ke reached his top speed of the day in his first lap at 115,237 mph in a race delayed two hours while rescue boats dragged the river for the body of a man who jumped from a bridge on a dare or bet. Chip Hanauer, 24, Port Townsend, was run- nerup in the Squire.
