NEW YORK (UPI) It's an incredible statistic that hits you squarely in the face like a wet dish rag.

Only one member of the Chicago Cubs has hit in double figures for home runs this season and he, Dave Kingman with 16, is on the disabled list. When you consider that the Cubs play most of their games in Wrlgley Field where home runs usually come in carloads, it is an unusual happening. One of the reasons for the lack of home run production has been the disappointing first half of the season of Bobby Murcer. Murcer, who hit 26 home runs last year, drilled a two-run shot Sunday to help the Cubs defeat the New York Mets 4-1 but it was only his tifth of the season. "I've been pulling away from the ball," admitted Murcer.

who despite his lack of home run production has hit safely In his last 13 games and boosted his average to .270. ''I've been having a concentration problem at the plate." Nevertheless, Murcer was pleased with his homer, which came off All-Star Pat Zachry in the third inning after a two-out single by Bill Buckner because it was hit at Shea Stadium where he has never hit the long ball very frequently. It was partly because of his failure to hit well at Shea that caused him to be traded by the New York Yankees after the 1975 season. Bruce Sutler, the Cubs' relief ace, shared game heroics with Murcer by re- lievig winner Mike krukow in the sixth with two men on and pitching out of the jam. After a run scored on an infield out.

Doug Flynn beat out at hit and Sutter walked Kranepool to load the bases before striking out Lenny Randle to end the inning. Sutter finished to get his 14th save. A mediocre record and a non-supportive team can't hide the fact that James Rodney Richard is one of the finest pitchers in the majors. A mountain of a men with a dilly of a fastball, the 6-foot-S Richard picked up his eighth victory in 17 decisions Sunday when he fired a four-hitter and struck out 12 in pitching the Houston Astros to a 5-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. "Most of the strikeouts came on my fastball," said Richard, who has now fanned 157 men to easily lead both leagues, "My rhythm has been better in my last two starts and my changeup is much better than it's been." The triumph snapped a four-game losing streak for the Astros and ended a four- game winning streak for the Dodgers.

The complete game was Richard's ninth in 19 starts and resulted in his third straight over Los Angeles this year. Don Sutton, 9-7, in quest of his 200th major-league victory, gave up seven hits and five runs in six innings before departing. "It's unbelievable," moaned Dodger manager Tom Lasorda. "He was throwing so well. I sympathize with my players.

It's hard to believe he's only 8-9." Houston scored in the first on doubles by Terry Puhl and Jose Cruz and added a run in the third on an RBI single by Enos Cabell. Art Howe drove in a run in the sixth with a single and Richard helped his own cause with a two-run single. Steve Garvey's RBI double to left-center in the sixth ruined Richard's shutout bid. In other National league games, it was Philadelphia 8, Montreal Chicago 4, New York Pittsburgh 6, St. Louis Atlanta 5, San Diego 2, and Cincinnati 8, San Francisco 2.

In the American League, it was Cleveland 7, Boston Chicago 5, Toronto Milwaukee 8, New York Kansas City 10, Baltimore Minnesota 7, Oakland Seattle 11, California 7, and Texas edged Detroit 4-3 in 13 innings. Phillies 8, Expos 7 Richie Hebner hit a pair of two-run homers and singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to give Tug McGraw, 8-3, the win. Daroid Knowles, 2-2, took the loss. Pirates 6, Cardinals 1 Willie Stargell and Ed Ott ignited a six-run seventh inning with back-to-back singles and Pittsburgh capitalized on errors by Garry Templeton and George Hendrick. Bass Hustlers The Logansport Bass Hustlers conducted a man wife tourney on the Mississinewa Reservoir Sunday.

Jerry and Connie Williams won the top prize while Paul and Marsha Little ended second. Chuck Ellison was third fishing alone and Fred and Anita Dillman'ended fourth. Logan Legion Takes Pair Logansport's American Legion baseball team swept a twinbill from Marion Sunday. The locals won the opening game 7-2 and the nightcap 6-1. The victories capped a three of four weekend that pushed Logan's record for the season at 9-3 using only underclassman players.

The locals scored their seven runs in the first game on five hits including a three-run double in the fifth inning by Jeff Ball. Eric Kinnaman homered to lead off the game for the only other extra base hit. Marion got Its two runs in the seventh, but its rally fell quite a bit short. Barry Bowyer went the distance for the locals on the mound giving up only three hits. He walked three and fanned four setting the side down in order in three of the seven innings.

Logan opened with five runs in the bottom of the first inning of the second game taking advantage of five walks in the frame and a double by Brad Platt, Logan got another run in the second after sending 10 players to the plate in the first. Marion got its run in the- third Sinning off two Logansport errors. Eric Sweet handled the mound duties for Logan in the second game. He walked six and struck out four. Logan will travel to Beech Grove on Saturday for a doubleheader and then host Lafayette on Sunday at LHS diamond in a p.m.
