Hazlett said the Lahti boy apparently was reaching for a pigeon when he fell. Two El Toro Flyers Killed O.A.S. PENSIONERS IN RETIREMENT Sarge, believed to be last surviving dog veteran of World War II, appears happy during celebration in Los Angeles of 20th birthday. Now nearly blind, German shepherd received nine citations, including Purple Heart with two clusters, for meritorious service in U.S. Army and Marine Corps in South Pacific. Mistress is Mrs. Jeanne Warner Platt. Two El Toro Marine Corps aviators were killed Saturday when their F9F8T Cougar jet crashed in a swamp while making a landing approach at the Pensacola, Fla., Naval Air Station. The two were identified as Capts. Robert W. Whaling, 31, assistant safety officer for headquarters and headquarters squadron at El Toro, and James J. Brennan, 30, executive officer of the squadron. CapL, Whaling, who lived at 706 N. Sherry Lane, Santa Ana, is survived by his wife, Carolyn and two children. He was graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy. Capt. Brennan lived at 1820 Poinsettia Ave., Santa Ana. Surviving him are his wife, |Mary Anne and three children. Brennan earned the Silver Star Medal for valor and the Purple Heart while he wa a squad leader in a rifle platoon in the Korean conflict ! He was commissioned an ! officer in 1953 and then won ihis wings. | Their jet trainer had been cleared for landing at the Florida naval station field when radio contact suddenly was lost. V i s i b i l i t y was imited "due to low-hanging clouds," authorities said. The Navy dispatched search crews and the plane was found in flames about two miles west of the field. In the wreckage were the bodies. Authorities said the two men, who both were transferred to the local base last November, had taken off from El Toro at 5:45 p.m. Fri-. day on a routine training flight across country.
