This holiday tournament is always one of the largest and most exciting chess events of the year. The 1990 version is also the Lina Gru-mette Memorial, in tribute to the woman who founded this tournament in 1980. This year, the Memorial Day Classic consists of four separate tournaments. About 300 players, including six-time U.S. champion Walter Browne, will compete in the main event, a six-round tournament offering $10,000 in prize money.

There is a special entry fee of 1 2 for juniors who do not wish to compete for cash. Three subsidiary tournaments are scheduled at the same site. Browne's World Blitz Chess Assn. (WBCAl will conduct a WBCA-rated blitz tournament at 8 p.m. May 25, the Memorial Day Bated Beginners Open starts at 10:30 a.m.

May 27, and the Memorial Day Last-Chance Action Tournament begins at 10:30 a.m. May 28. The Beginners Open, a four-round tournament for players rated below 1400 or unrated, features low entry fees of $6 for adults, $3 for juniors, in an attempt to attract newcomers to tournament play.
