Mr. Draper Raub, eldest son of A. Raub, has returned to this place from California with Lis family, after an absence of thirteen years. He reports the country flooded with water, hard currency, and Chinese are thicker than flies in August. Troops have been sent out in pursuit. Michael Nolan, a laborer, aged 25 years, was kicked and beaten by Thomas on Friday afternoon, until he died. The difficulty, which occurred near Lake Montebello, in Baltimore county, originated in a dispute a bill for board due McDonnell by Nolan. The authorities of North Scituate, are investigating a very mysterious case, which indicates foul play. A bundle of lady's clothes, some articles spotted with blood and with the appearance of being torn off violently, were found in a thick woods near Hingham.

They are said to resemble the clothes of Mrs. Wheelwright, who mysteriously disappeared from her home in Beechwood district some two weeks since. Considerable excitemeut exists in the community. At Basswood, the other day, at dusk, while a boy was drivintr home a calf, a bear made a raid. The heifer ran, and the boy, neglecting to let loose of the heifer's tail, was saved.

The puddlers met at Pittsburg on Saturday, rejected the compromise proposed by the manufacturers and decided to continue the lock-out. Governor Chamberlain, of Columbia, South Carolina, on Saturday issued a proclamation offering a reward of $1,000 for the arrest and confinement in any jail in that State, of John II. McDevitt. the absconding treasurer Edgefield county. McDe.

vitt is gone with about 75,000 of the county money. One of the greatest base ball contests on record, took place on last Saturday in New York, between the Mutuals and the Cincinnati nine. After playing ten innings, the score stood to 0, in favor of the Mutuals. Another game fully as remarkable was played at Providence, R. on Wednesday between the Rhode Island club of Providence and the; Taunton club of Taunton.

Mass. It required seventeen inning to decide the contest, but the wonderful part of the display was the small number of errors made on either side. The home club aggregated but three errors, while theTauntons, excepting the catcher, had only five accredited to them. The defendants recognized were forfeited in the surety of the peace cases in which the following parties were dofendants Jacob Harner, John Campbell, Patrick James Hull, Bridget Mauahan, John Nesbitt, Mathew McCann, John Barnes, Mathew Kirby, and Frederick Ruoff. Joseph Griffiths was sentenced to pay costs and give recognizance to keep the peace for one year. E. Lowecstien and Lowenstien were tried for assault and. battery with intent to kill Joseph Neuerger, prosecutor, and were found guilty as to first count.

The1 need of a refreshing rain is felt in this section. Crops are generally good. The hay crop will be stronger this season than it has been for many years. Oats', though a large portion were sowed late, promises well. Winter grain will not be more than fifty per cent, of an average yield, owing to the severity of the winter.

Potatoes come up well, but if the bugs" are not vigorously will go dowu again under the biting influence of their enemy. There is also a fine prospect for fruit. In many orchards apples are setso full that if none drop off there will be too many to develop well. Pears blossomed full, but a frost, as they were in full bloom, blasted a suflicieut number to enable the' remainder to ripen well. Grapes were much harmed by frost, but with a favorable fall a partial crop may be expected.

Stone fruit, except peaches, are with us a failure, but if the remainder of the seapon is favorable a fair supply is expected. Fat cattle are very scarce, and consequently beef is high priced. Flour sells at $3 70 and -i 50 per cwt. Feed $2 25, and corn meal do. per cwt.
