INTERNATIONAL NEWS Former women's world champion Nona Gaprindashvili of the Soviet Union won the second Women's Interzonal in Malaysia with an overwhelming score of 1 3 Gaprindashvili, who reigned as champion from 1962 to 1977 before being dethroned by current champion Maya Chiburdanidze, had her best result in years.

Xie Jun of China finished second at 12W-4J4. Nino Gurielli of the Soviet Union and Alisa Marich of Yugoslavia, who tied for third at 11V6-5V4, will play a short match to determine who advances to the Candidates tournament, the next step toward the world championship. Anna Akhsharumova of Massachusetts came close to qualifying, but two losses near the finish dropped her to fifth place, at 1 1-6. The 1989 U.S. Women's champion, Alexey Root of Los Angeles, scored a miserable 1-16, drawing only two games.

LOCAL NEWS The Southern California Chess Federation (SCCF) conducted an eight-player invitational tournament over the last two weekends in El Toro and Los Angeles for the championship of the chess state of Southern California. Jack Peters re peated as champion, despite losing his first and last games and playing poorly in a tew others. Peters scored 4-2Va, a half-point ahead of Matt Beelby, Paul Kopioy and IM David btrauss. Cyrus Lak- dawala and Charles Van Buskirk were next with The highest-rated player, IM Jeremy Silman, was way off form and managed only 2W-4VS. Mark Duckworth had 2-5.

This is the second year that the SCCF has run an invitational state champion ship. Although the system of regional qualifying events has worked well for both players and organizers, the championship itself consumes a substantial portion of the SCCF's annual budget, and some SCCF board members doubt that the expense is worthwhile. This subject will be considered at the SCCF's annual meeting on Sept. 2, during the Southern California Open in Commerce. Ed Labate has closed Labate's Chess Centre, the Anaheim store with a huge selection of chess books and equipment.

For most of the 1980s, Labate's Chess Centre was a chess landmark, hosting more than 100 Grand Prix tournaments and countless smaller events. After numerous clashes with local chess authorities, Labate sued the U.S. Chess Federation, claiming that its actions hampered his business. Although he received a settlement of $35,000, he considered the lawsuit a failure. His business never rebounded and, for the last year, Labate searched in vain for a buyer.

He decided to put his inventory of 30,000 chess books in storage and devote himself to his burgeoning baseball-card business. Calvin Powell won the 47-player Hughes Summer Swiss at the Hughes Chess Club, 8433 Fallbrook Ave. in Can-oga Park. Class prize winners were Leonids Gaigals, Howard Zimmerman, Michael Keating, Beverly Woolsey and Gagik Balikyan. The club plans two Thursday night tournaments, beginning Aug.

9. The eight highest-rated entrants will play a round-robin, and everyone else will compete tn a Swiss-system event. For more information, call Herman Hess at (818) 346-5959 or John G. Price at (818) 363-1379. The August Long Beach Quads take place Aug.
