or Saturday, April 14, 1984 Philadelphia Inquirer 5-B Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices Ray Middleton, 77, concert singer and actor in theater, film and TV Ray Middleton, 77, the towering baritone who sang his way to stardom, on Broadway and went on to build a career on the concert stage, movies and on television in productions that ranged from the stage South Pacific to TV's died Tuesday at his home in Panorama City, Calif. Educated at the University of Illinois and the Juilliard School, he made his debut the Detroit Civic Opera Co. Success there carried him to Broadway, where he won the male lead role in Jerome Kern's Roberta, a 1933 production co-starring Bob Hope, George Murphy and Fay Templeton. In the 1935-36 concert seasons, he sang with the St. Louis and Chicago opera companies and toured with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

His polished performances brought offers, and he faced a choice between signing a Metropolitan Opera Company contract or going to Hollywood. He chose Hollywood. After a pair of potboilers, he tried Broadway again and succeeded, appearing in Knickerbocker Holiday with Walter Huston pounds, he looked like a leading man placed him under contract. He was teamed with Ona Munson and John Wayne in such pre-war film fare as Lady From Louisiana. Others, such as Hurricane Smith, Lady For a Night and Girl from Alaska, followed.

He was rescued from such epics by World War II. He served in the Army Air Corps worked his way through another round of films after the war. Then he changed his pace, going back to Broadway for roles such as that of Sam Cooper in Love Life and of Frank Butler, who shot it out with Ethel Merman in Annie Get Your Gun. When Ezio Pinza left Broadway for Hollywood in 1950, Mr. Middleton stepped into the role as Emile de Becque, in Mary South Martin.

Pacific, playing opIn the years that followed, he continued to commute between films, stage and television productions. His movies included I Dream of Jeannie and 1776. His most recent appearances were in the television series and "Too Close for Comfort." Harry Green, 83, NAACP official Dr. Harry J. Green, 83, a dentist who gave much of his time to the civil rights movement, died Thursday at Temple University Hospital.

He lived in the West Mount Airy section of the city. Dr. Green, who had been an officer at every level of the NAACP, was vice president emeritus of the organization at the time of his death. Dr. Green earned his doctor of dental surgery degree from Howard University in 1925 and, a short time later, opened offices at 1120 W.

LeAve. He continued to practice, treating a few old friends and patients there on a part-time basis until five or six years ago, family spokesmen said. Dr. Green, an Army veteran, be- Deaths here Helen West Markley, 87, who was active in church and community, died Thursday at Rydal Park Medical Center in Abington. She formerly lived in Norristown and Germantown.

Mrs. Markley taught Bible classes at area churches throughout her life and was vice president and secretary of the Philadelphia Council of Churches during the 1950s. She also had been chairwoman of the council's Women's Department. She was active in the Church of the Brethren in Oaks, Montgomery County, and the First Brethren Church of Germantown. She was active in the Red Cross during World War II, working with volunteers in the Germantown area.

After the war, she worked as a volunteer with the Salvation Army. She was the widow of Philip R. Markley. Survivors: two sisters, Anna W. Dewees and Elizabeth W.

Newman, and a grandson. Services: memorial, 2 p.m. Wednesday, Rydal Park. Celeste deLongpre Heckscher, 78, a retired Haverford businesswoman, died Thursday at Bryn Mawr Hospital. She lived in Wynnewood.

Educated the Shipley School, Miss Heckscher owned and operated a dress shop under her name until she retired in 1971. Survivors: three sisters, Jean Butterer, Angela Lippincott and Madeline DeLone. Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Old St. Davids Church.

Miriam B. Mogavero, 78, who was active in community and civic affairs, died yesterday at Bryn Mawr Hospital. Formerly of Wynnewood, she lived in Rosemont. She was active in the Philadelphia Grand Opera Company. She was a former vice president of the company and served on its board of directors.

She also directed post-performance entertainment. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, she was interested in state Republican affairs and was active in the Hannah Penn House. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was the widow of Dr. Francesco Mogavero, former chief surgeon of Misericordia Hospital.

Ray Middleton In a 1963 photo and then in the George White Scan- dals and American Jubilee. Republic Studio officials noting that at 6 feet, 3 inches and 200 came a member of a draft board in 1940 and was a working member for 31 years. He was elected chairman of Selective Service Board 135 in 1961 and continued until he was forced to step down by a mandated retirement age. He was active in the civil rights movement throughout his life, serving as an officer of the NAACP on the city, state and national Dr. Green was NAACP president of the Philadelphia during the 1960s and president of the Northwest Philadelphia chapter of the NAACP during the 1970s.

He was a member of the national board of the NAACP from 1950 through 1982 and was assistant treasurer of the NAACP's national board Survivors: her daughter, Miriam Roland; two sons, Frank and Theodore; 12 grandchildren; a brother, and a sister. Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Lutheran Church of the Holy Communion, Center City. Anthony Paul Ruscio, 61, general mechanical superintendent for Conrail, died Thursday at his home in Voorhees Township, N.J. A railroad worker for 42 years, he started with the Pennsylvania Railroad and later worked for Penn Central and Conrail.

He was a veteran of service with the Army during World War II and served on the board of directors of the Mutual Benefit Association of Railroaders. He was active in St. Andrew the Apostle Church in Gibbsboro, N.J. Survivors: his wife, Grace; son, Paul three daughters, Maryanne French, Kathryn M. Kelly and Margaret Mary Closson; eight grandchildren, and a brother.

Services: Mass of Christian Burial, 1 p.m. Monday, St. Andrew the Apostle Church. Irene Cutler Toretch, 78. a worker in charitable organizations, died yesterday at Atlantic City Medical Center.

She lived in Atlantic City. With her late husband, Louis Toretch, she operated a tavern at 11th and Arch Streets in Philadelphia. They sold it and opened the Toretch Restaurant at the Boardwalk and Arkansas Avenue in the 1940s. They retired 15 years ago. She was a member of philanthropic organizations, including the Women's League for Medical Research.

Survivors: four brothers, Ralph, David and Jack Cutler, and Max Gersten; and two sisters, Helen Campel and Rose Feinsinger. Services: 1 p.m. tomorrow, Stillman's Funeral Home, Hunting Park. Gerald Tempone, 72, a Philadelphia-area veterans leader, died Thursday at Delaware County Memorial Hospital. He lived in Upper Darby.

A Marine Corps veteran of campaigns throughout the South Pacific during World War II, he was serving his seventh term as commander of American Legion Post 204. He was active in the Folsom Post of the Vet- Elizabeth Ann Lamp, 34, budding children's author Elizabeth Ann Lamp, 34, a budding author with an abiding interest in children and animals, died Tuesday at her home in Exton. Her death was attributed to natural causes, although the direct cause could not immediately be determined. Born in Bryn Mawr, she spent nearly all her life in Main Line communities. She was educated at the Montgomery Country Day School and the Shipley School, attended Vermont College and was an honors graduate of the University of New Hampshire.

She worked at the Country Book Shop in Bryn Mawr and pursued her in animals? dardening and interests Deaths elsewhere Vice Adm. Walter Louis Curtis 68, a retired Navy veteran of three wars, died Wednesday at his home in La Jolla, Calif. Adm. Curtis served on the carriers Hornet and Princeton, both of which were sunk by enemy action during World War was awarded the Bronze Star saving a shipmate fore who was wounded in the sinking of the Princeton. He continued on carriers in the Korean war, and in May 1962, he took command of the carrier Kitty Hawk.

He was awarded the Legion of Merit for his service during the Vietnam War when he commanded Carrier Division 9 in operations off the coast of Vietnam. He retired in 1972 and later served as vice president and director of the Northrop Corp. Stillman Berry, 97, internationally known as a flower breeder and collector of rare seashells, died Monday at his home in Redlands, south of Los Angeles. Mr. Berry, who was chief executive officer of the Winecook Ranch for 67 years, was credited with breeding 1,000 new varieties of flowers.

His collection of millions of seashells was rated by the Smithsonian Institution as one of the world's finest. He organized the research library at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography and, to keep up with worldwide research, learned to read French, German, Greek, I Latin, Japanese and Norwegian. A hobbist in photography, he was a Stanford University freshman when the San Francisco earthquake flattened most of the university's buildings on April 18, 1906. He was one of the few to photograph the first effects of the earthquake. He was known as a humanitarian and gave financial aid and advice to young people.

During the Depression, he gave away much of his money. In order to help others, he and his mother lived on 50 cents a day. Pupils at sniping to get counseling Associated Press LOS ANGELES Children who watched or were wounded as a sniper fired on a schoolyard in February, killing a 10-year-old girl and wounding 13 other people, may get state aid for psychological counseling, the city attorney said Thursday. Students, parents and teachers are eligible for grants of up to $23,000 each from the state's Victim-Witness Assistance Program, City Attorney Ira Reiner told a news conference. The sniper, Tyrone Mitchell, committed suicide.

They reopened in the Northwood section of the city. The couple operated the stores from 1945 until they retired in 1980. was active in the Unity-Frankford Grocers Association, the Golden Age Group and the Holy Name Society. of St. John Cantius Church in Bridesburg.

Tuesday, St. John Cantius Church. Agnes Reynolds Rothman, 75, a former West Philadelphia funeral director, died Wednesday at the Fitzgerald Mercy Catholic Medical Center in Darby. Reynolds, who had a funeral home at 1821 Spring Garden St. After she married the late George J. Rothman, she opened the Reynolds Rothman Funeral Home at 739 N. 63d St. and operated it there for.

33 years before she retired in 1972. She was a member of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and National Funeral Directors Association and was former prefect of the Sodality of St. Rose of Lima Church.
