David Love, a Boston man sitting a row in front of the disoriented passenger, said he heard the man ask: "What do you do when your number's up?" A woman sitting between Marti-no and the man said she became so alarmed by his behavior that she moved to another seat. She said the man frightened her by repeatedlyand without any prompting-assuring her that the flight would be a safe one.

After the woman moved, Marti -no prepared to do the same. The man then became briefly and chillingly coherent, telling Martino: "Don't try to leave or I'll throw you out of the plane." Several flight attendants repeatedly went back to talk to the man, witnesses said. One of the attendants brought a first-aid kit and an oxygen mask. "People were constantly in and out of there. I was petrified," said Los Angeles physician Joe Gutman.

The plane's captain also talked briefly to the man. Witnesses said that just before the plane landed, the captain, who was not identified, told passengers over the public address system that a faulty gauge was forcing the crew to return the jet to Los Angeles. Crew members who left the plane would not comment on the incident and airline spokesmen could not be reached. Police led the man off the plane June 3. 1990 Position "5065: White to play and win.

PANE WITTENBERG Dane Wittenberg was shot and killed May 27 while working as a taxicab driver in the Los Angeles area. Wittenberg was a frequent competitor in California tournaments in the 1970s and 1980s, and he attained a master's rating in the mid-'80s. His father jokingly called him "the second-best chess player to come out of Culver City High," a teasing reference to famous Culver City High graduate Diane Savereide, who became U.S.

Women's champion. Chess players will remember him most for winning the brilliancy prize at the 1986 American Open. Recently Wittenberg had concentrated on postal chess, and he was on the verge of earning a master rating in that game too. He was 35. MEMORIAL DAY CLASSIC Chess fans were thrilled by the performance of an unheralded master last weekend at the 11th Memorial Day Classic in Santa Monica.

Despite the efforts of 36 masters in the 168-player Championship section, 17th-ranked Thomas Wolski, a master for barely a year, took first prize of $1,500 by winning six straight games. In the last three rounds, he achieved successive upsets of IM's Igor Ivanov and Jack Peters and GM Walter Browne, the last in sensational style. Wolski is only the second player in the tournament's history to score 6-0 in the Championship section. Third-ranked IM John Donaldson was clear second with defeating IM David Strauss in the final round. Browne, Peters, Matthew Beelby, Burt Izumika-wa, IM Doug Root and top expert Philippe Olivier finished with 5-1.

Stephen Booth, Charles Van Buskirk, Ron Frasco, Cliff Hart, John Patty and Peter Yu split the master prize, Juan Fausto was top under 2000, and Pharaoh Habakkuk was best under 1800. Stephen Rose, George Waters and top unrated Howard Goldberg led the 1 19-player Reserve (under 1800) section with scores. Jeremy Martin was best under 1400. The Memorial Day Classic honors the tournament's founder, Lina Grumette, who died in 1988. She tried to emphasize fun in her tournaments, and her sue-, cessors have carried on the tradition by arranging a variety of side tournaments.

Walter Browne's World Blitz Chess Assn. (WBCA) began the weekend with a 61 -player speed tournament, which Browne won with 1 1-1. Edgar Carreno, George Mirahmadi and Charley Armen-darez tied for first in a very popular 59-player Beginners tournament. The tournament concluded Monday with two Action chess events, which drew a total of 64 players. Jim Thinnsen and Sid Rubin won with 5-0 scores.

I ALSO CHIRO-PEOIC At TREMENOOUS SAVINGS Deputy Held in Fatal Shooting of Girlfriend An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy was arrested early Saturday on suspicion of murder in the fatal shooting of his girlfriend in his mobile home in the Point Dume area of Malibu. William J. Burke, 30, a six-year veteran of the Sheriff's Department assigned to the West Hollywood station, was taken into custody by deputies after he telephoned a 911 emergency line about 2 a.m. and reported the shooting, authorities said. Deputy Patrick Hunter said that Brenda Berndt, 25, who had worked with the department as a civilian employee until November, 1989, was shot in the head.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. Hunter said Burke and Berndt had maintained an "on-again, off-again relationship." Berndt had been in the process of moving in with Burke early Saturday when the two quarreled inside the mobile home in the 29000 block of Heath-ercliff Road, Hunter said. Burke was being held without bail at the Men's Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles. HOURS: FRI. 10-8, SAT.
