Timman jumped to a 2-0 lead, but Short caught up by winning the fourth and fifth games. Earlier, Timman won a brief exhibition match against Yugoslav GM Ljubomir Ljubojevich, IW-Vi. The 12-game Candidates final match between Timman and former world champion Anatoly Karpov, originally scheduled for London, will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in March. The winner will challenge Gary Kasparov in the 1990 world championship.
