Ile was one of the attorneys who, in the carly 1950s, helped the church keep its nonprofit status, which was threatened when its leaders refused to sign a loyalty oath stating that they weren't Communists, attorney Leon Goldin said. A resident of Sherman Oaks and Studio City, Schmorleitz died July 26 of cancer, said his son Richard Schmorleitz. A St. Louis, native, Schmorleitz traveled with his parents to California in a Model A Ford when he was 5. He graduated from North Hollywood High School and received a law degree from Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles.

In 1943, he joined the Merchant Marines as a seaman and traveled to the Panama Canal zone. He returned to the United States after World War II and opened a law office in North Hollywood. The office was later moved to Sherman Oaks. Ile continued practicing law until his death. His wife, Elcanor, died in 1985.

Schmorleitz was active in the California Democratic Council in the 1950s and '60s, and served as president of the North Hollywood Democratic Club in the late 1950s. He was also a longtime member of the National Lawyers Guild, the American Civil Libertics Union and the American Assn. for the United Nations. He served as president of a local chapter of the association from 1979 to 1981. Ic is survived by his companion, Helen Barsha of Studio City; sons Richard Schmorleitz of Encino and Robert (Bob) Schmorlcitz of Del Mar; a brother, George Schmorleitz of Paradise, and two granddaughters.

A memorial service will be held in November, around Thanksgiving. Donations can be made in Schmorlcitz's name to the National Lawyers Guild, Los Angeles chapter; the ACLU, Los Angeles chapter; the Cousteau Socicty or other peace or environmental groups. Pierce Brothers Valhalla Mortuary in North Hollywood is handling the arrangements. -Harold Martin Shanahan; Retired Navy Commander Martin Shanahan, who spent 20 years as a Navy officer, has died in Canoga Park. Ic was 88.

A 35-year resident of Reseda, Shanahan died July 25 of complications of pncumonia, said his wife, Minna Shanahan. He was born Sept. 18, 1901, in Eric, Pa. He joined the Navy in 1919 and worked as an aviation mechanic during the pioneer days of naval aviation. Ic was graduated from the Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1926 and began 20 years as a commissioned officer.

Prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Shanahan traveled California, where he gave lectures to business leaders and social groups on the dangers of totalitarian governments and Adolf Hitler, said his wife. During World War II, he was a convoy commodore in the western Pacific and was commanding officer of an advanced air base unit in the southwest Pacific. He was promoted to commander in 1943. After Shanahan retired from the Navy in 1946, he carned a bachelor of science degree in business administration and a master's degree in industrial management from UC Berkeley. He worked for several defense and acrospace companies in the San Fernando Valley.

Ie was a supervisor of master scheduling at North American Aviation- Atomics International, manager of organizational planning at The Marquardt Co. and systems analyst at Hughes Aircraft Co. In 1957, he was the founding president of a group called Systems and Procedures, which developed operating procedures for businesses. During the 1960s, he was active with the fedcral Service Corps of Retired Executives, helping small businesses. Shanahan is survived by his wife of 35 years.

At his request, there will be no services. Oswald Mortuary in Reseda handled the arrangements. Jack Sklar; Retired Manufacturing Plant Owner Jack Sklar, who owned an airplane parts manufacturing plant in North Hollywood, has died in Studio City. Ile was 74. Sklar died July 29 of complications from heart problems, said his son, Buddy Sklar.

The elder Sklar was a longtime Van Nuys resident. A Chicago native, Sklar came to California in 1947. In 1950, he and the late Paul Blutrich opened Engineering which made parts for commercial and military plancs. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Bca; a son, Buddy Sklar of Simi Valley; daughters, Honore Weiner of Westlake Village and Karen Ginsburg of Canoga Park; a stepson, Alan Troop of Westwood Village; and seven grandchildren. A funcral was held this week with burial at Sholom Memorial Park in San Fernando.

Maxine Gates Unland; Retired Actress, Comedienne Maxine Gates Unland, a roly -poly comedienne who appeared in vaudeville and in dozens of films, has died in Panorama City. She was 73. She died Friday of complications from respiratory problems, said her daughter, Binnic Smith. A native of lichron, she used her large size to create a comic character that carried her through a 35-year career in nightclubs, vaudeville and films.

She used her maiden name of Maxine Gates, but was often billed as "250 Pounds of Pep and Personality." Her films include "The Babe Ruth Story" (1948), "Giant" (1956) and "Flap" (1970). She also appeared on ited Skelton Show," "The Jack Benny Show" and "The Lucille Ball Show," and acted in some Three Stooges shorts. In later life, she owned and operated a self -storage business in Van Nuys. She also had an alligator named Oscar that lived in the back yard of her North Hollywood home. She is survived by her daughter, Binnic Smith of Granada Hills; a sister, La Vieve Forbes of Volcano, Hawaii; three grandchildren and two great -grandsons.

A memorial service is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Crawford Mortuary chapel, 8717 Tampa Ave. in Northridge, which is handling the arrangements. Donations can be made in Mrs. Unland's name to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Los Angeles.
