Friday, Jan. 21, 1983 Philadelphia Inquirer Obituary Mary A. Hammond, food editor Mary Acton Hammond, 90, who as food editor of the Philadelphia Bulletin wrote under the byline Frances Blackwood, died yesterday at Salem County Hospital, Mannington, N.J. She lived in Alloway Township, N.J. One of the first people in the news paper field to hold the title, Mrs.

Hammond was named food editor in 1929. At the time, most newspaper executives considered the position of food editor more appropriate for publications such as the Ladies Home Journal. The newspaper had no area in which she could work, she was told, so she was told to work from her own kitchen. She did so for the next 53 years. She built a large and faithful following, a group that made the Bulletin attractive to advertisers when supermarkets blossomed and Wednesday food ads became a regular feature in the 1940s.

Few readers or advertisers, for that matter knew that Frances Blackwood was Mary Acton Hammond. Mrs. Hammond was quite comfortable with the name, which she borrowed from her grandmother. A member of an old Quaker family the Actons were among the settiers of Salem in 1675 she offered recipes that were sometimes steeped in history. They regularly appeared in her Between Neighbors column, which appeared in Bulletin until it ceased publication last year.

Almost every recipe that appeared was tested in the basement kitchen of her home, a restored brick structure built in 1736. The house had remained in her family, little changed by weather and time. The recipes that she did not personally test before printing were from readers whom she had come to know and trust through the years. Some recipes, were from grandchildren first readers, she noted, Although she spent most of her working time at home, she was always on the go. She continued to race to meetings until the newspaper folded.

She also had traveled much of the world for her job. One trip took her to Great Britain in 1941 to write a series of stories about life in wartime England. Eventually, the stories became a book, Mrs. England Goes on Living, published in 1943. Her influence in the field was wide.

T.T. Chang, as secretary of Chinatown's YMCA, credited her with a Dana Rae Morrison, 97, widow of Penna. official Dana Rae Maxey Morrison, 97, who entered the city's social life as the wife of a Philadelphia newspaper editor who later became a political figure and a state aide, died yesterday at Crozer-Chester Medical Center. Formerly of Ivyland, Bucks County, she had lived in Chestnut Hill. Swarthmore and more recently at Crosslands, near Kennett Square.

She was the widow of Charles Munro Morrison, editor of papers in Philadelphia and New York and secretary of the Commonwealth under three governors. A midwesterner, who could recall crossing the Mississippi with her family in a Conestoga wagon on the way to Kansas, she came to Philadelphia with her husband in 1921, when he was named editor of the old Public Ledger. Subsequently, he also was named editor of the New York Post. He became editor-in-chief of Cur- tis-Martin Newspapers Inc. in 1930 as Cyrus Curtis added The Inquirer to his holdings.

After the Public Ledger was merged into The Inquirer in 1934, Curtis heirs lost interest in the paper, and it was acquired by M.L. Annenberg in 1936. During the 1940s, he entered the political world and served as commonwealth secretary under Govs. Edward Martin, John C. Bell and James H.
