An-example of how competition between the makers of two different but similar-purpose item can split school boards-and the communities they represent--is conventional flooring versus carpetm for classrooms and libraries.

In recent years, the latter has cut into the marke 'dominated-by asphalt or vinyl tile and linoleum High initial expenditure, the makers claim, is offse by carpetihg's Warmth, acoustical qualities and ''maintenance cost.
