Getty to Glen Alden 975,648 to Gulf 440,339 Lawyers Ask Speedup On Rail Merger A I (AP) Pleading that every day counts in keeping the financially ailing New Haven Railroad alive, government lawyers are trying to speed up the Supreme Court-approved merger of the New York Central and Pennsylvania The high court blessed the long-debated merger 7 to 1 Monday -but normally judgments based on its rulings aren't is- sued'for 25 Until the judgment is issued the court in New York which has jurisdiction cannot allow the merger to proceed. The usual time lag between the ruling and issuance of the judgment would keep the merger on ice until Feb. 9.

Justice Department and Interstate Commerce Commission lawyers have urged the Supreme Court to try to move faster into this case because of the sad state of the New Haven. The New Haven ultimately will be part of the Penn-Central combine but at the moment it is running deeply in the financial red. For several years it has been bankrupt, operated by court-appointed trustees. "The plight of the New Haven Railroad," the ICC and Juslice Department said, "requires prompt financial assistance which is available only from a merged Penn-Central." Although the Pennsy and the New York Central did not want to acquire the New Haven, the ICC imposed this as one of the conditions for granting the merger. Once the merger takes place the two giants are to begin first-aid for the New Haven, including a three-year, $25-million loan program.

SLs Report Big Savings Gain In 1967 WASHINGTON (AP) The savings and loan industry enjoyed a 192.4 per cent savings gain during 1967 from the depressed level of 1966 despite the smallest December increase in six years, the Federal Home i Loan Bank board reported Friday. At the same time, the industry said it now anticipates a savings gain this month of about $200 million rather than a net loss as had been feared some weeks ago. The U.S. Savings and Loan League said although the January gain is expected to be less than the same month a year ago, the outlook for the 1968 mortgage market is now optimte.tic.

I Savings and loan associations are the.largest single source of home mortgage loans. Government and industry experts late last year feared January might produce a net withdrawal of savings from SLs, a factor which shrunk the amount of available mortgage money in 1966.
