PAGE 12 A I I I Sheinwold On Bridge By ALFRED SHEINWOLD When I was littls boy, but old enough to know better, I had to be told that my eyes were bigger than my stomach. The same thing happens to bridge players. West isn't fooled by the first trick; he knows that South has the jack of hearts and that it can do no good to lead another heart.

If East had the jack of hearts he would have played it instead of the nine of hearts at the first trick. West, therefore, shifts to a jpade. This gives us a chance to learn something about South's anatomy. South must not take the spade finesse. If South is greedy enough to play a low spade from dummy, East wins with the king of spades and promptly returns a heart.

The hearts become established, and East gets in with the king of clubs in time to lead another heart. The defenders get four hearts and two clubs, and South is down two. South can avoid this kind of stomach-ache by refusing the spade finesse. He takes the first spade trick with the ace and immediately knocks out the king of clubs. Now the defenders can get the king of spades, as well as their two clubs, but declarer lakes the other 10 tricks.

The moral is very simple. Don't take every finesse in sight; you can't digest them all. Ares Will Report To Young Demos Charles E. Ares, Tucson attorney, will report to the Young Democrats tomorrow on the findings and recommendations of the organization's policy committee.
