THURSDAY, JANUARY 20, 1966 DAILY CITIZEN lucson's Finances 4 Just Okay' Urie Foresees No Trouble By CHARLES TURBYVILLE Citizen Staff Writer With half the budget year now gone, the City of Tucson's financial condition is good, says Director of Finance John M. Urie. "It's not dismal, it's not great, it's just okay we're doing all right," Urie said. tax revenues remain at their present level and there are no unanticipated spending demands, the city should have no trouble carrying out the programs in its budget, he said. TAX REVENUES for the period from July 1 to Dec.

31 were up 3.3 per cent over the comparable period last year. Since the estimates in the budget were based on a 2 per cent increase, there is a safety cushion, Urie observed. Only two important revenue categories were markedly below estimates, Urie said. One of them, various building inspection fees, accounted for $89,042, down from $101,661 last year. At mid-year- only 36.6 per cent of the budget estimate had been collected.

The decrease reflects a continuing low level of activity in the construction industry, Urie said. 7ines collected in City Court for moving traffic violations totaled $138,543, down from $264, 941 last year. Collections so far amount to 33.4 of the budget estimate. Urie said it isn't clear just what the cause of the decrease is. A large unanswered question is the matter of city employe raises, Urie said.

The impact on the budget depends on future action by the City. Council, and at this point no one knows what that action will be. TOTAL COLLECTIONS during the six-month period ending Dec. 31 were $7,962,197, compared with $7,711,173 last year. Total spending was $8,307,160.

Revenues amount to 48.1 per cent of estimates; spending amounts to 48 per cent of appropriations. The difference lies in $675,000 carried forward from last year enough to cover the gap between current revenues and appropriations. The figures exclude the operations of the city's water utility, which is self-supporting. UA Names Dr. Matte To Health Post The University of Arizona has selected Dr.

Paul J. Matte Jr. as new director of the Student Health Service. The previous director, Dr. Merwin Chappel, issued a public statement last fall disagreeing with the administration on policy.

He left the university in November. Matte takes over the job from a practice of general and forensic medicine in Phoenix. He also has been assistant medical examiner for Maricopa County. Before that, Matte was staff physician with Stanford University's Student Health Service in 1964 and early 1965 and he has been resident physician at the Santa Cruz County (Calif.) Hospital. Matte holds an LL.B, degree from the Stanford University School of Law as well as an M.D.

degree from the University of Southern California School of Medicine and a B.A. 'degree from the University of Tennessee. He is a native of Massachusetts. Cuba Treated Beached Boat Crew Royally KEY WEST, captain who spent two days in Cuba after his shrimp vessel ran aground and sank says he and his crew "never had it so good." "They put us up in hotels and we" didn't have to buy anything," Harold Bothwell. the skipper of the 73-foot Charles Singleton, said after arriving here yesterday with eight other shrimn fishermen who were detained.

A Cuban coast guard helicopter picked him and two crewmen up after the boat slammed into a reef in Cuban waters Sunday, and they stayed at "a fancy hotel" in Pinar Del Rio, Bothwell said. The Charles Singleton and two sister vessels were en route to Nicaragua from Tampa. The crewmen of the sister boats were carried to Cuba, but Bone was detained forcibly, Bothwell said. 1 A A JAN. 22 LAST DAY BIG RUG BARGAINS IN REMNANT PIECES! BLUE TWEED WOOL 109.99.
