Saturdav, Sept. 20. 137!) Philadelphia Inquirer Death Notices Death Notices Obituaries Joseph Zawislak, 42, the 'Dr. Shock9 of TV sr 's fJ'1 To thousands of area television viewers he was Dr. Shock, the ghoulish host of Saturday horror movies who wore outlandish makeup and opened his program by crawling out of a casket.

To his family and friends, he was Joseph Zawislak, an insurance salesman-turned-magician-turned-local cult hero. Mr. Zawislak, 42, who had a history of heart problems, died early Friday morning at the Medical College of Pennsylvania. He had been taken to the hospital Thursday evening from his Roxborough home. Dr.

Shock's TV career began 10 years ago after a chance conversation in a Roxborough barbershop with Fred Bauer, a director at WPHL (Channel 17). Bauer gave Mr. Zawislak an audition, and a short time later the Dr. Shock character made its debut on a Saturday night movie program. WPHL officials decided to cancel the show after 13 weeks because, as one colleague recalled, "the numbers (ratings) just didn't show up in the books." The executives could not have misread the feelings of their viewers more.

Within a few days of the decision, the station received thousands of cards and letters protesting the cancellation. Pickets even appeared at the station's doorstep. Dr. Shock became a fixture in one of the dwindling number of locally produced television programs, switching in 1972 to a Saturday afternoon time slot. A daughter, Doreen Harriet, 9, often appeared with him under the name of Bubbles.

(Today's Channel 17 movie has been pre-empted for a Phillies game.) Mr. Zawislak, a native of Roxborough and a graduate of Dobbins A HELIUM BALLOON carrying four people skims 1,000 feet above the Rockies in Colorado yesterday on the third day of its attempt at the first nonstop transcontinental balloon flight. O'Hay, an executive in the brokerage firm of Butcher Singer Inc.

and an internationally known expert on securities markets and the economy, died Thursday at Lankenau Hospital after suffering his second heart attack in about a month. He was 46. O'Hay was senior vice president and chairraan of the investment policy commiitee of Butcher Singer at the time of his death and was the author of the firm's weekly Market Letter, a widely read commentary on securities end economic trends. A native of Easton, the affable O'Hay pursued a wide range of interests aside from securities and economics and often tapped his extensive knowledge of literature and philosophy to spice his analyses. O'Hay achieved international attention in 1973, when, as senior vice president and director of research for Provident National Bank, he was one of but a handful of authorities to accurately forecast a sharp decline in the 1974 stock market.
