B6 Sunday, April 19, 1992 The Philadelphia Inquirer Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices OBITUARIES Neville Brand, 71, a big-screen tough guy ASSOCIATKI) I'KKSS SACRAMENTO Actor Neville Brand, 71, a real-life war hero who made -a career out of playing tough guys In movies such as Stalag 17 and Birdman of Alcatraz, has died of emphysema. Mr, Brand died Thursday at Sutter General Hospital, said Angela Barn-hill the Sacramento County coroner's office. He appeared in more than 40 films but is probably remembered best for a role on the small screen. In the NBC television series Lore-do, he played the rowdy, gravel-voiced Texas Ranger Reese Bennett. "He certainly enjoyed the role," said his daughter, Mary Raymer, who lives in Dixon, 111.

"It was a chance to add a little humor to the tough guy he always played." He was raised in Kewanee, 111., and joined the Army after graduating from high school. He was discharged in 1946 as the fourth most decorated GI of World War II. He received the Purple Heart and Silver Star. After the war, he went to Los Angeles and attended Gellcr Drama School on the GI Bill. His first big break came as a gun-happy hoodlum in the 1950 thriller D.O.A.

with Edmund O'Brien. Three years later, he starred with William Holden in the POW film Stalag 17. His first leading role came in 1954 with Return from the Sea, the only romance film he ever did. Friends may call Mon. eve. 7-9 PM By Frederick Cusick IN()t 'IHKK STAKK WKITKK Donald D. Eppinger, 58, the president and chief executive officer of Main Line Federal Savings Bank, died Thursday at his home in Wynnewood. He spent virtually his entire career at Main Line Federal.

His father, L.A. Eppinger, and brother, John, preceded him as heads of the family-run bank. "We just do our own thing," Mr. EDDineer explained in a 1988 inter view, soon after an investment in Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. stock made news by netting the 100-year-old bank an $11 million profit.

"Our philosophy is to take a quiet, conservative, but aggressive approach in our own marketplace. And we want to derive a reasonable profitability from our actions." Mr. Eppinger was born and raised in Ardmore. He graduated from Lower Merion High School and Rider College and joined Main Line Federal in 1958. In addition to his bank post, Mr.

Eppinger served as a governor of the Insured Savings Institutions of the Delaware Valley and as president and a trustee of the Montgomery County Savings and Loan League. He also served as a director of the Main Line Chamber of Commerce and as president and a director of the Ardmore Business Association. Mr. Eppinger was an avid golfer. He was a member of the St.

Davids Golf Club and the Create Bay Golf Club in Somers Point, N.J. He was a member of the Church of the Holy Apostles in Penn Wynne. He served as an accounting warden and as a member of the vestry. Mr. Eppinger is survived by his wife, Virginia B.

Smith 89, a retired Fairmount Park Police officer who risked his life to save several people in a Rittenhouse Square fire in 1946, died yesterday at the Medical College HospitalsBucks County campus. Mr. Smith became a hero in the early morning of Sept.

6, 1946, when, while working as a Rittenhouse Square park guard, he heard a scream and saw flames coming from an apartment house on Locust Street. He phoned in the alarm, then ran to the building. He tried to get in the front, but the door was locked. He directed residents to the back of the building, where he broke a window and rescued a baby and two adults. When firefighters arrived, Mr.

Smith helped rescue two other residents. He fractured his spine while breaking the fall of a firefighter who slipped from a ladder during the rescue of a 79-year-old woman. His son, retired Army Brig. Gen. Harry E.

Smith Jr. of Warminster, was 18 at the time. He recalled that it took his father several months to recover. The Inquirer and the city jointly awarded Mr. Smith a Medal of Valor.

He also worked as chief of parking for the University of Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and served as president of the League of the Sacred Heart. He was a director of the Police and Firemen Federal Credit Union. He was the widower of the former Mary Elizabeth Kirk. In addition to his son, Mr.

Smith is survived by a sislur and a grandson. A viewing will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Nativity of Our Lord Church on Street Road in Warminster. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled after the viewing. 1 v1.
