The earphones also enhanced the stereo effects, as with audio Walkmans. The battery adds quite a bit of weight to the 2.7-pound unit, so holding it as you watch is not practical. It's better to place the Video Walkman on a flat surface rather than your lap, because the device warms up during use.

Also, the length of most movies will require you to have a second battery charged and ready. (One battery comes with the GV-300; extra batteries cost about $45.) Overall, the GV-300 was impressive and a pleasure to operate, with the feel of solid equipment. It can be more than an adult toy. In its sales brochure, Sony likes to emphasize possible business uses for the unit, such as taped presentations and training. That might make the Video Walkman a good write-off for tax purposes, but with more than 1,800 movies now on 8mm cassette, it's the entertainment aspect that will probably wow most shoppers.

Unfortunately, so will the price tag. Battaolia) 671007 rrvdFWrtoftrDovas(71)ww (Ran MoonV) Crimth Jacob' Arise. The prime example, of course, is the mini-camcorder, both the 8mm variety and the Compact VHS (or VHS-C). Both use tapes small and light enough to fit in a shirt pocket. But there's another product that's just as intriguing, with a different purpose. It's a video-watcher, the Sony Video Walkman, a combination color TV and 8mm VCR you can hold In your hand. Unlike the audio Walkman, the Video Walkman has not inspired a wave of copycats.

With prices starting at $1,000, a hand-held VCR is definitely a luxury Item. Furthermore, some major manufacturers who have invested heavily in VHS have yet to be convinced that the 8mm format will ever win mass-market acceptance. The fundamental question is: How many consumers need to have a VCR small enough to fit in a briefcase? If you consider such a gadget frivolous, read no further. But if you're often on the road or in the air, if you often have idle time at airports or train stations, or if you're just a dedicated TV- and movie-watcher, the Video Walkman is something you should know about. I recently had the opportunity to use Sony's model GV-300 (list price the fanciest of three models on the market.

The number of features packed into this unit (5 inches wide by 9 inches long by 3 inches thick, or about the size of a large paperback) is dizzying. I won't give them all in this space, but here are the basics: 4-inch LCD color monitor, 8mm VCR with one-event timer, cable-compatible tuner, hi-fi stereo sound with Mega Bass, audiovideo jacks, camera input and dual earphone jacks. The only thing I couldn't manage was to make a recording off the air, because of the poor broadcast reception in my area, but I did see ghostly channels on the screen. In all these functions, the Video Walkman was just like using a table-top VCR, only easier because I didn't have to reach behind a stack of equipment to make the connections. The picture, for the most part, was excellent, but as with all LCD screens, it must be viewed straight on, otherwise the image washes out. To facilitate viewing at the proper angle, the screen portion is hinged, like a lid. You also must position this carefully to avoid screen glare.

Color, tint and brightness controls are easily reached, yet out of the way to avoid accidental touching. Prerecorded movies, I found, looked best during brightly lit scenes. The Mega Bass (a low-frequency booster) gave the sound an added kick. An edit switch is useful for anyone who copies tapes from a camcorder to a VCR (or from one VCR to another). A copy is never quite as sharp as the original, but the edit-enhancement circuit reduces picture loss, producing a better duplicate. Switching it on during playback boosts the luminance (black-and-white) portion of the signal.

For normal viewing, it is left off. Do you have question you'd Kka answered? Sand your queries to Andy Wickstrom, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Box 8263. Philadelphia 19101. 89 minutes. Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, Marilyn Maxwell. Bud and Lou tangle with a jealous sheik and his hugs harem. NANCY GOES TO RIO (1950) (MGMUA) $19.98. 99 minutes.

Ann Soth-ern, Jane Powell, Carmen Miranda, Barry Sullivan. Musical with Sothern and Powell as a Broadway actress and her daughter who are competing for the same role and the same man. PANAMA HATTIE (1942) (MGMUA) $19.98. 79 minutes. Lena Home, Ann Sothern, Red Skelton, Dan Daily.

John Carroll. Slapsticky version of the Broadway musical has Nazis invading Western dude ranch. Comedy LAUREL HARDY'S LAUGHING '20 (1965) (MGMUA) $19.98. 90 minutes. Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy.

Stan and Ollie are joined by other slapstick stars in this collection of classic sequences. A pie in the face. Sports NBA STARTING FIVE COLLECTION (1991) (CBSFox) $9.98 each. Two new titles in the NBA series: The Making of Michael Jordan's Playground (23 minutes) and Larry Bird: Winning Basketball (60 minutes). Two "little" films top this week's list of new movies: one a lilting tale of misbegotten romance, the other a rough story that's more notable for its unusual video distribution scheme than its content.

THE MIRACLE (1991) (LIVE) $89.98. 100 minutes. Beverly D'Angelo, Donal McCanne. A story of a teenager who falls for an older woman without knowing that she is the mother he assumed was long dead. It's a minefield, but director Neil Jordan supplies a gossamer delicacy and deploys a magical Irish setting to bring it off with tender humor.

No MPAA rating (profanity). WHORE (1991) (Vidmark) $92.95. Theresa Russell, Benjamin Mouton, Antonio Fargas, Ginger-Lynn Allen. Russell stars as a Los Angeles street hooker who chews gum and talks to the camera in this excruciatingly frank, downbeat, serio-comic picture from Ken Russell, Britain's king-of-excess director. The characters are cliche, the dialogue is forced, and Theresa Russell's performance is painfully off-balance.

Four versions of the tape are being distributed. The original, unrated "director's cut" version runs 90 minutes; the NC-17 version that appeared in theaters runs 85 minutes, and two R-rated versions run 80 minutes. One of those two retains the movie's original title: the other, intended for those who do not want to ask for it by name, is the same film with the title If You Can't Say It, Just See It. (It would be safe to say that even the R-rated versions contain profanity, nudity and adult themes.) Recent movies DRIVING ME CRAZY (1991) (SVSTriumph) $89.95. 88 minutes.

Billy Dee Williams. Thomas Gottschalk, Dom OeLuise. Milton Berle. Fish-out-of-water comedy with Gottschalk as an eccentric east German inventor whose trip to Los Angeles is an utter diaster. PG.

MEGAVIIXE (1991) (LIVE) $89.98. 96 minutes. Billy Zane, J.C. Qunn, Grace Zabriskle. Futuristic thriller: In a world where all forms of entertainment are forbidden by the government, a cop is assigned to infiltrate the center of the entertainment black market.

R. PALE BLOOD (1991) (SVSTriumph) $79.95. 93 minutes. George Chakiris, Wings Hauser. Supernatural horror: Two investigators are on the trail of a vampire who is truly a bad apple, murdering, his victims instead of just draining them.

R. SPIRIT OF '76 (1991) (SVSTnumph) $89.95. 82 minutes. David Cassidy. Olivia Abo, Lerf Garrett, Barbara Bain.

Science-fiction comedy: Cassidy stars as a daring pilot from the year 2176 who is dispatched to the year 1 776 to witness the birth of the nation. Instead he lands in the year 1976 to witness horrorsl the birth of disco. PG-13. SWEET TALKER (1991) (LIVE) $89.98. 91 minutes.
