AUG. 11, 1898. THE AMERICAN FIGHTER. The American tighter, be he soldier or finilor, respects his body and realizes that he has a soul. The Hone-lulu Star' the day after the American soldiers landed says: "Gould anything be finer than the conduit of Uncle Sam's boys yesterday up as they had been iu the transports, given free shore leave in a town that they were strange to, among eaple they did not know, there was every temptation to cut loose and show the worst side of their nature.

But this town saw what probably no other town has ever seen, and that is a couple of thousand men given liberty And not a case which called for police interference. "Of course, this comes from the peculiar material of which these troops are composed. They are no riffraff, no sweeping of the purlieus of a city, 'i hey are the pick and choice of the growing western states. Had not the call of duty come, these youth ons and all woulu have been filling honorable (03itions and laying the foundations of their own prosperity and that of the community in which they lived." ITooAI.Kfi sets the face for all other Arizona towns. Gomcjs is too wily an old gentleman to be led into any "me too" policy by Oarjia.

When the Indian mints reopen for the coinage of silver it will be at a ratio of 16 to 1. We want a place" will be the song of the powers when the Philippine question is reached. Miles is pegging away in Porto Rico regardless of peace negotiations. That is right Keep it up. Last accounts frgin Garcia are to the effect that he is still keeping his indignation on the top shelf.

it Thb mints of India are to be opened to the free coinage of silver. England is bound to give prosperity to India. Please remember that the soup-houses in this UHtry flourished while the McKinley tariff law was in force and effect. Fortunately for Fitzhugh Lee, he. 0t a good deal of glory out of the Cuban affair before he was bottled np ii Florida The country lias had quite enough of Secretary Alger, who has shown a acuity for mismanaging rarely equalled bv a cabinet officer.

McKinley administration will Tve William J. Bryan the same opportunity to distinguish himself thut it I. as given Fitzhugh Lee. The Cuban junta is very quiet these 1nys, and it has reason to be. The 0,000 patriots under arms turned out to be an invented myth.

Tuk democrats of Nebraska are put ting on their campaign clothes, and they propose to stay in the field until last day in the evening. England is not saying a word, but several of her warships are pointing for Manila, and Dewey knows they are coming to give him the glad hand. The democrats should be careful to dominate only the best men for office this year. No gambler or saloon iimU should be selected this season. The people wont stand it.

It is said that ISen llsney has started a campaign paper in Tucson with which to fost himself into office. Tl'ha people will attend to Ben's tse if he comes before them for their votes. A Frkscii surgeon claims sev--critf advantages for a bullet of com-pressed paper covered with polished -aluminum, the chief being that the -wounds are surjfictly clean, healing with little risk of blood poisoning. Thkek is considerable cross firing lor the democratic nomination for fcherifT. So far as heard from the can- dictates are Capt.

C. Ii. Kelton, Sam W. Finley, W. H.

Taylor, N. Leatlierwood and thore is room for more. The longest pole will knock the "persiiuon." There should be uo selection of delegates this year to the democratic convention by the central committee. The only way to elect delegates is by vote of tho people at regularly called primaries. Nogales Democrats are against any' other Method.

There should be no proxies voted in convention either unless held by some person residing in the precinct from whijh the proxy is sent. A Visalia lady protests against kissing, which she says is a growing evil in that city and breeds disease. It may be an unfair suggestion, but we are willing to wager a last bummer's hat that the lady in question has reached that time in life when we gain our knowledge of kissing mostly by looking on others are being kissed. She shouldn't look; then she wouldn't be envious and crabbed about it. The man who wrote the following "squib" certainly knew whereof he spoke: "A good local newspaper beats tne world as an advertising A hand bill attracts attention by ac.

cident. The newspaper carries your message to a waiting audience. The fence rail ad. is a corpse that can only be looked upon by a few neighbors who have to go near it. The newspaper advertisement goes into the home takes a seat in ths family circle and taiks to the hundreds of people who pay for that kind of an entertainment.

They love the family newspaper and read it with confidence." The Sure La Grip Cure. There is no use suffering from this dreadful malady, if you will only get the right remedy. MILTON RETURNS. The Leader of the Posse that Shot Broncho Bill. Capt. J. D.

Milton, of Wells, Fargo returned Tuesday morning from his hunt and capture of "Broncho Bill" and his partner Bill Johnson, the two notorious outlaws and train robbers. Captain Milton and his party consisting of himself, George Scartorough, Young Thacker, son of Wells Fargo's detective, and a man named Martin had camped on Black river at one of its few crossings and the next morning were up around camp taking it Martin was hunting horses and Miltin was catching trout out of the stream when some one commenced scooting near by. Milton looked up and saw "Broncho Bill" e. short distance away shooting at a snake The outlaw had not seen Milton yet and when the offi cer got up and started towards camp i to get his rifle "Broncho Bill" followed him thinking he was some cowboy, The outlaw rode up to camp by the time Milton arrived, his two partners remaining upon the hill above. He did not discover tuat he was riding into the arms of the officers until the common "throw up" was given by Milton.

Instead of stopping he turned to run and at the same time commenced firing, but was soon brought to the ground mortally wounded by the officers who all opened fire. While the officers were taking "Broncho Bill" in his two partners who were in the rocks above were pouring a heavy rifle fire into the officers but without effect though the bullets were getting close. Having disposed of the hea I robber the officers then turned there attention to his assistants and soon had one of them fatally shot and the other one running for his life. On account of the roughness of the eountry he got away, but not till his horse was killed from under him. Capt.

Milton says the fight didn't last more than a minute or two, but it was rather lively while it did last. The while in pursuit of the robbers rode at ni'ht and layed up in the day time that is the reason tbey were lounging around and that is also the reason they surprised tho robbers who had no idea the officer were in the neighborhood. "Broncho Bill" is not yet dead but can't 1J' many days as he is badly shot through his lungs from side to side. The officers are to le congratulated upon their good work for they have rid the country of two very bad men and put the fear of GoJ in the hearts of several others. Dewey's Reward.

The question of the amount of the bounty earned by Admiral Devey and his men in the battle ef Manila has been settled by the judge advocate general of the navy. The law pro vides that when tiie American warship is superior to the defeated war- ship of the enemy, $100 shall be paid as bounty eacli man of the enemy's vessel, but if the American vessel is inferior to the other then 200 shall be paid for each member of the enemy's crew. While some of the Spanish ships that met defeat from Dewey's squadron were superior to some of the American gunboats, as for example, the little Petrel, it was decided ly the judge advocate geneial that distinctions could not be made, and the relative strength of the opposing squadrons should be made the bsis ef settlement as to the amount of money to be paid to. the American officers and sailors. The judge advocate decided that Dewey's fleet was superior to that of Admiral Montijo and the distribution of bounty will be made on the basis of $100 for every Spaniard attached to Moiitijo's fleet.

It is stated that the Spanish crew numbered 2,000 men. If this is correct the amount of $200,000 will be distributed among Dewey's men. Dewey will get $10,000 his share.
