William McKnight, the beef contractor for Fort Huachuca, spent a couple of days here this week on business. Bill's numerous friends in No -gales are always glad to see him.

Thursday night Henry 'Levin, the commission agent and Mexican customs broker, was a paeaengar on the south bound train en route to points in Sonora and Sinaloa, Mexico, on busiuess for his firm. Tonight Captain William McGee, president of the Otate Gold Mining Company, will arrive from Los Angeles, his present home, and continue on south to the Otite mines near Llano, owned by bis company. J. H. Thompson, manager of Los Pilares Mining Milling departed for Los Angeles this morning; on company business, expecting to return Tuesday niht.

Los Pilares is all right, 60 is Thompson. Colonel O. Po6ey, of Colorado, has bonded the Coboto mines in the Altar district, Sonora, from Col. Epes Randolph and M. P.

Freeman of Tucson. It is a copper property and is on the line of the proposed Tucson and Port Lottos railroad. District Attorney A. O'Connor, after a successful trip to San Francisco and otlier points of interest in his home sttte, is back feeling fine aud dandy. He says Sn Francisco, the "Paris of America," is grander and finer than ever.

Yesterday little Mary, the ten-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. Barker, died at the family residence on West Kim street, from pneumonia. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon.

To the family we extend sympathy. George F. Cecil, represntative of Allis-Chalmers Company, with bead-quarters at Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico, has for the past few days been a visitor in the city, accompanied by bis wife. Mr. and Mrs.

Cecil are registered at the Montezuma hotel. Friends of Mrs. Raines, wife of Manager L. M. Raines of the Columbia Consolidated Mining Company, will be pleased to learn that she has almost fully recovered from a recent illness.

Master Hampton, who was also on the sck list, is also again able to be around to the delight of his numerous friends. The Western Union Telegraph com pany now seadB night letters over their wire, of fifty words for the price of a 10-word day message, to any city in the United States. The letters are delivered the next morning after they are filed with the telegraph company, receiving same. Today President Lovett of the great Southern Pacific accompanied by Co I Epes Randolph and other of his lieutenants will pass through Nogales en route sonth over the Mexican lines.

The high officials were met here by Manager Ingram who came up from Guaymas in his private car "Culiacan Monday night Mrs. Biiley, wife of Superintendent Neil Bailey, will leave for Mazatlan, Sinaloa, for a couple of weeks visit with relatives, after which she and the baby will eo to the old home in Atlanta, Georgia, for the summer; Of course Mr. Bailey will spend the Bummer in Guaymas, the beautiful southern bay city, where duty calls him. Mclntyre of the Mint Juarez mines, in the Altar dis trict, Sonora, Mexico, after ppending a few days here on company busintsa. has returned to the mines. Charles F. Bache, of E9tes Park, Colorado, accompanied by their bright little son, have for several days past been guests at the Monte zuma hotel, having arrived from Tucson Wednesday in their automobile. Mr. Bache is interested in mining property out in the Altar mining d's trict, Sonora, Mexico, which he will visit before returning north. The arrest and incarceration by the Mexican customs guards, one day this week, of T.

V. Leese, formerly of Tucson, now residing at Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico, where he is engaged in the land and commission business, passed south Monday night on his way bick from a business trip to Los Angeles. He was accompanied by a party of three capitalists who will look at a bi tract of land, near the capital city, with a view of purchasing same from Colonel Lese and his associates Pope, president of La Liber- tad Mining Oouipany, who has for several days past been a guest at the Montezuma hotel, is negotiating with the American Ore Milliog Company, for a number of the Quinner mills and crushers, which will be built by the Arizona- Sonora Manufacturing Com pany of this city, and installed at Mr. Pope's mines in Sonora, taking the place of stamp mill now in operating there. L. Peck, one of the honorable members of the common council, has this week been out at his mining camp, inspecting the work of taking out high-grade silver-lead which he will ship to El Paso. Mr. Peck is an old prospector and miner, having followed that business more than thirty years ago in this territory. He says if there is any high-grading done on his property, he proposes to personally direct the work.

Attorney S. M. Franklin of Tucson, one of Arizona' 8 best known most successful members of the legal bar, was ra visitor in town the forepart of the week on business connected with the J. E. Wise-Twin Buttes right of way legal controversy, which was settled out of court to the satisfaction of all parties.

Mr. Franklin represented Mr. Wise, and Frank Cox, the Southern Pacific attorney, appeared in the interest of the railroad company. E. Ross, stenographer in Superintendent Temple's office, will uot accompany bis chief to Guaymas.

Ross says he does not doubt that the climate at the bay city is fine at this time of the year, but just the same good old S. A is plenty good enough for him. Mr. Ross' plans for the future have not been learned, but being an expert at his business and thoroughly honest and reliable, he'll have no trouble "catching on," in a country more to his liking. Y.

Bonillas, the mining engineer, is enjoying a well-earned rest at his beautiful Nogales, Sonora home, after an extended trip to various mining districts on professional business. Jefferson Davis Rountree, expert well-driller, until recently engaced in business in Nogales, lias returned from Cienega, Sinaloa, Mexico, where he i went to sign a contract to bore four wells for M. Wise and A. Harrison, two of Santa Cruz county's most successful stockraisers, were here to meet California cattle buyers, who will purchase a bunch of cows from Messrs. Harrison and Wise, for im mediate shipment. A couple of months ago the gentlemen disposed of a big lot of two and three year old steers to the same parties, ac a good figure. Rain or no rain, Harrison and Wise nearly always have their cow-money on the right bide of the ledger.

Both understand the business and conduct earae for the money there is in it. William Hibbard, an old-lime resi dent of Nogales, died suddenly of heart failure while sitting in a chair in his room last Tuesday. A few hours fore his sudden passing Mr. Hibbard walked to the court house and appear ed in better health than usual. Deceased was a native of Philadelphia, and was about 65 years of age.

For some time past he has been in poor health, being uuable to work for a living, and was cared for by the county. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, interment being in the Nogales cemetery, at the expense of the county. Richard Zellner, president of the Zellner Piano of Los Angeles, California, after spending a. couple of days in the city visiting his many customers, departed Wednesday morning for the coast via Cananea and Biebee. The Zellner pianos are known in every town in southorn Arizona and Sonora.

The American colony of Llano, Sonora, is happy and many hundred dollars richer, as a result of last Sunday's horse race at Santa Ana, between Frank Cox's racer and another record-breaker from Santa Ana. All of Llano and Santa Ana, as well as taany admirers of out-door sports from Her-mosillo, Magdalena and Nogale, were there with their moral and financial support, and several thousand dollars changed bands on the result.

The race was pulled off soon after sunrise. A six -mile course had been staked off and men on fast horses were stationed at each quarter mile post to whip the horses. The Cox horse won the race, hence the rejoicing at Llano, and sadness at Santa Ana. Mr. Cox may decide to bring bis horse to the United States.

The three act comedy entitled "What's Next?" will be presented at the Lyric Theatre next Monday evening, for the benefit of the Nogales Public School Library. The cast is made up of Nogales most talented ladies and gentlemen, and the entertainment promises to be a great success in every respect.

Inventor of the Quinner Mill and Crusher Sells Interest. Wednesday Mitt Quinner, inventor of the Quinner Mill and Crusher, undoubtedly the cheapest, most f-imple and best machine yet invented for the' recovery of gold, ou Wednesday, in this city, sold to the American Ore Mining Company, a certain interest io all his rights, receiving the sum of $50,000, gold, cash, and "S300.000 worth of stock in the company, ot which Sydney B. of New York, is president; A. Richardson of Douglas, vice-presideut, and Frank W. Doan of Douglas, secretary and treasurer.

The price of these wonderful machines, several of whicb are now-working in a most succesfcful manner out in the Altar distiict, Sonora, whero there is a great gold excitement, a a result of their installation and opera tion by the inventor, is only $2500 The Arizona-Sonora Manufacturing Company of this city, for which Roy Titcomb, are agents, who built Mr. Quinner's first machine, will at once commence manufacturing the new machines which are now the talk of everybody interested in mining, especially those who own property down in the rich placer gold districts of Sonora. It is said that already the company has orders for a large Dumkr of machines, for immediate delivery. Mr. Quinner has agreed to remain with the company five years and will personally superintend the installation of all machines sold by his company.

Fifteen years he was connected with the great gold mines of one of the companies operating down at Minas Prietas, and sure knows gold when be sees it..
