10-E Wednesday, June 20, 1990 The Philadelphia Inquirer Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices OBITUARIES John L. Ripley 76; owned store and tavern on Columbia Ave. "jp0i 'St I became a skilled player at checkers and pinochle, beating many local players for money. He saved all of his winnings and used that money to help buy a house in the 1500 block of North Bouvier Street, where he rented out a third-floor apartment. Soon he bought another apartment house, and was making a comfortable living as a landlord.

In 1953, he opened his ice cream parlor, featuring banana splits, hand-drawn icecream sodas, and 15 varieties of ice cream, including bubble-gum. He later converted the back of the store into a delicatessen. He ran his store from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week. He worked Christmas and New Year's and resisted all family pleas to take a vacation.

Working at his general store, Mr. Ripley supported a wife and seven children, and put five of his children through college. Besides his son and his wife of 56 years, the former Christine Hill, he is survived by sons, James, Joseph and Steve Perry; daughters, Joan Cooper, Jean Roller, Julia Wimberley and June Maddox; a brother, 19 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
