H. Lenhart, artist By Bonnie Baker Special to The Inquirer Elizabeth E. Hopkins Lenhart, 77, an artist and a leader in the historic preservation movement in Haddonfield, died Wednesday at her home after a heart attack. Mrs. Lenhart's portraits in oil, watercolors, crayon and pencil were shown at the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington and the National Academy in New York.

She also exhibited in many local art shows, including the Haddonfield Arts and Crafts League, of which she was a trustee for many years and president from 1960 to 1962. After studying at the Philadelphia College of Art and the Berte School of Design in New York City, she worked with Marguerite Archambault, a Philadelphia miniaturist. She also studied with Charles W. Bentz of Devon. Despite the national reputation of her work, Mrs.

Lenhart devoted much of her energies to Haddonfield, where she was born. She was one of the founders of the Haddonfield Preservation Society in 1966, and served as official historian and a member of the executive committee for 24 years. Mrs. Lenhart fought to preserve Haddonfield's historic houses and was appointed by the borough planning board to the committee that drafted the borough's first historic district ordinance, which became law in 1971. Her written histories of many of Haddonfield's historic homes appeared in a booklet, "Noteworthy Homes in Haddonfield," and also in a bicentennial calendar of historic homes, both published by the Preservation Society.

At the time of her death, Mrs. Lenhart was writing the histories for another Preservation Society publication, "Preserving Historic Homes." She also contributed articles and illustrations to the booklet, "This is Haddonfield," published by the Haddonfield Historical Society.
