In contrast to Univision and Telemundo, vice president and general manager Starrett Berry said, Galavision "at least breaks even." The first time HBO offered a boxing bout in a Spanish version was Feb. 25, 1989, when a set of Latino announcers described then heavyweight champion Mike Tyson's knockout of Frank Bruno in Las Vegas. Now all of HBO's fights are available in Spanish at no extra charge.

A variety of Hispanic accents provides the details, including the blow-by-blow call from Theo Rodriguez, who is from Ecuador, and expert analysis from Chun Romero, who is from Panama. Concepcion Lara, director of Selec-ciones, says that about 20 to 25 percent of each month's schedules on HBO and Cinemax are offered in Spanish, including most of the big movies. HBO is conducting a study to determine how many of its 17 million subscribers use the Spanish version. helped to make Telemundo, headquartered in New York, the nation's second-largest Spanish TV network. It covers about 75 percent of the national Latino market, compared to about 85 percent for Univision and about 30 percent for Galavision.

WTGI is affiliated with Telemundo in the same way KYW-TV (Channel 3) is affiliated with NBC. In each case, the station agrees to carry the network's programs and in return receives a portion of the national advertising sales, called "network compensation." Telemundo owns five stations, with KVEA-TV, Channel 52 in Los Angeles, and WNJU-TV, Channel 47 in New York, ranking as the largest. Although Telemundo's Spanish-language programs occupy more space on WTGI's schedule than those in all other foreign languages combined, Pettiecord said Channel 61 also carried weekly totals of 12 hours in Italian, six hours in Korean and a half-hour in Greek. On May 26, the station will premiere its first Ukrainian program, The Ukrainian Melody quency. WYBE is expected to get on the air this month.

WXTV is one of nine stations owned by Univision, the oldest and largest Spanish-language TV network. Hallmark Cards Inc. owns 63.5 percent of Univision, which delivers hours a day of Spanish programming here and is off the air only from 2 until 6:30 a.m. Selia Medina, assistant to the general manager, said Univision's most popular program was Cristina, a talk show hosted by Cristina Saralegui, airing each weekday from 4:30 to 5 p.m. Cristina is the most popular of three new programs Univision introduced this year, as competition among the Spanish networks heated up.

The others are Tama Fortuna (Fame and Fortune), a sort of Latino Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, and Cita con el Amor (A Date With Love), a Hispanic version of The Dating Came. The newest and smallest Spanish-language network is two-year-old Galavision, headquartered in Los Angeles. All of its programs, Spanish TELEVISION, from 1-E Amar al Salvaje (In Love With a Savage), 6 to 6:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The standard stars of a typical no-vela are a young couple, one rich, one poor, who marry despite their economic differences and then must smile their way through endless spats and squalls among their families.

A particularly creative variation on this basic theme is Maria, Maria, which WTGI airs from 7 to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. A Telemundo publicity release describes Maria, Maria this way: "Arturo Peniche and Alba Roversi star in this Venezuelan novela. Two women, Julia and millionairess Maria, are involved in an automobile accident. Maria is killed and her charred remains are identified as those of Julia.

Julia survives, but suffers from amnesia, and the accident also leaves her face disfigured. She is mistakenly identified as Maria, and finds herself married to Maria's unfaithful husband Esteban. And so Julia enters a world far different from her own. her troubled U.S. Bankruptcy Code for 27 months from 1987 into 1989 and, he said, cannot afford to produce local programs right now.

"We're existing on our revenues," Pettiecord concluded, "but we're looking to grow, looking for a new investor, or a new owner." Although Univision is seen in the Philadelphia TV market area as Channel 42, it actually is WXTV-TV, Channel 41 in Secaucus, N. a UHF station that went on the air in 1968. The station has a transmitter in this area to deliver its signal locally. It was seen here as Channel 35 until February, when WYBE-TV, Philadelphia's new public-TV station, laid claim to that noncommercial fre Hour, and on June 2 its first Polish series, Kalejdoskop Polonijny (Polish Kaleidoscope). Specialized advertisers using WTGI include entrepreneurs selling instructional books and tapes on how to speak English, and merchants on part of North Fifth Street in a predominantly Puerto Rican business district, Pettiecord said.

"Many of the signs are in Spanish there," he said, "and many of the products have Spanish labels." WTGI does not produce any programs of its own. "It's probably one of the biggest complaints we get, that we have no news or public affairs programs," said Pettiecord. WTGI took shelter under Chapter 11 of the life becoming more entangled with every episode."
