UjQmClillLiJLi By JACK LLOYD ii8irr Mnttrtain'funt Writer There is little doubt that the two most influential rock performers to emerge to date in the 70s were Alice Cooper for better or worse and David Bowie, all a-quiver and a-glitter. Among other things, these two introduced the rock set to the potential joys of theatrics. The chief difference between the two is that Bowie takes his music seriously and, for the time being at least, has abandoned the razzle-dazzle of showmanship in favor of pursuing musical development. But then Bowie has talent even if it has been misdirected here and there along th way. Alice Cooper, on the other hand, is nothing if deprived of his passion for outrageous showmanship.

The more grotesque, the better. Like "Welcome to My Nightmare," the latest Cooper production, which will slither into the Spectrum on April 25. In both cases, we are now brought right up to date with the release of new albums from these performers Bowie's "Young Americans" (RCA Records) and Cooper's "Welcome to My Nightmare" (Atlantic Records). Bowie's album is especially Interesting in view of the fact that all but two of the numbers were recorded at "Siema Pop Sounds ratei case of Alice Coo-per'svf elcome to My Night-mare'we are presumably hearing' the recorded version of his upcoming road show. And while the artistic depth of a David Bowie is nowhere in sight; "Welcome to My Nightmare" ranks as a small masterpiece.

A masterpiece of the-'Sbsurd, to be sure, but still a In driving at this conclusion, "one must keep in mind the realities of Alice Cooper, supreme master of the almighty put-on. A put-on that with this album reaches new heights of put-down. With nocturnal horror shows hardly, in demand, since most of us can conjure far more than we desire, who else but Alice Cooper could make a fortune selling his private nightmares? "I hope I didn't scare you," Alice sings more or less in the title cut. "We sweat, laugh and scream here." Then there is "Devil's Food," and we are ordered to "get ready for the lady Very strange. Aha, along comes Vincent Price, crawling out of a coffin or; something, to introduce us'to the "Black Widow tiie unholiest of queens." IH10JD1D 7- But this David Bowie is a sly one. A wrong move at this stage of his career could have been disastrous. Even so, many of his fans might be turned off by the results, but "Young Americans" remains a triumph. This blend of custom-made spacey rock and earthy Philly soul has no business working, but it does. Of the Sigma Sound songs only the title cut on "Young Americans" seems a bit pretentious.

Everything else is superb. However, the two songs recorded in New York seem somewhat out of place. A Beatles song, "Across the Universe," featuring John Lenon on guitar, apparently is an attempt by Bowie to duplicate Elton John's commercial success with "Lucie In the Sky With Diamonds." The other New York song, "Fame," was cowritten with Lennon and Carlos and it's another one of those silly songs about how tough it is being a superstar. After all, collecting garbage for a living isn't too terrific either. No matter, aside from these small complaints, "Young Americans" is first- 1- mi in JJJLIW JOHN WAYNE "BRArMNtGAN" RICHARD ATTFNBOROUGH JUDY GEESON-MEL FERRER PG PUIHTAl OUItHHCI iawt nultnil wv net far (xt-tmim nil JOHN VERNON -RALPH MEEKER United Artists "IRANMGAN" NOW 20th BIG WEEK! 1605 CHESTNUT ST Mil PAmrNO 1:15, 3:20, 6:55, 10:30 563 9881 SNEAK 5: 1908 ISTT Ti 1 567-0604 5M-28S7I MAC DAOi MALI CTR HOlMtS 586.9505 IJIIlll IIU1UIII mi iLin i mm nm, Mie 4 '-j Pis to 3'i'J mmmm STOKER MARTIN 3S 9:40 'Pilot' WMCMNlkMnW Hlffl'if ft Alt.l MM MMU lIKrai iff' Vpt kwafc WILLIAM RlROiJR GWlffl Pil0 SHUDCN eiiiwm m.m 'AniM giboieb AftllliAMGffiOlifl iD MlW.
